Just to clarify, Java 17 or modded Java 23 would not help much if the best my decade old system can go for is 4GB RAM in vmparams? (I could go 6GB, but a lot of folks say that I should keep half of my 8GB free (technically 7.5GB due to Nvidia 970's peculiarities)

Enemy fleets I'm actually interested in simulating, to test my fleet composition, roughly in order of importance:

 - Special Omega-Ordo bounty
 - Double Ordo(as approximation of the above that's a lot easier to find)
 - Single Ordo(for getting cores)
 - Doritos
 - Ziggy
 - Guardian(for my exploration fleet)
 - Maximum power Mothership spawn(for my exploration fleet)
 - Star Fortresses

As such, despite all the improvements, the new Simulator seems pretty much exactly as useless as the old one. Even a single Ordo cannot be properly simulated because the enemy fleet size seems to cap at 240 DP, and I need to beat about 20 of them first to collect all the AI cores needed to know how to beat them.

Thanks Alex!, I am happy knowing that you are looking to improve game performance! (Especially since I already put out a post complaining about the loading times on the forums recently, which you have read and replied to lmao  :D

4Gb is already decent if you don't plan on having a ridiculous amount of mods in your run (I'd suggest like 8 or less factions and a few ship packs if that's what you prefer). Also, if no one has explained that to you yet, it's usually recommanded to keep around half of your machine's total RAM because stuff needs to run in the background for your pc to work properly. If you really want to use as much RAM as physically possible though, simply reduce the amount of softwares running at the same time (like internet browsers, as suggested in this thread, in the "what if I don't have enough RAM?" part).

Hope that helps!

I did not expect you to tackle the sim at this time Alex, but the changes sound really great! I see myself spending way to much time in there, and finally optimizing my fleet for specific factions. Codex next? :D It could use the same meta-progression unlock mechanics. Gotta Scan 'Em All!

Kinda tangentially related, but simulator enhancements make me think of this: It could be a nice immersion/QoL option to have an after-battle dialog option that pretends that the last battle was actually just a simulation. That would prevent the "need" for a reload when your fleet gets wiped, and enable you to either try again (this time for real!) or turn tail. It would of course cost a Story Point (0%).

You decide to....

   1. Proceed

   2. Shut down the simulation. Good thing you ran it, now you know what not to do. [1 SP, 0% XP]

The game was completed 8 years ago and we get a free expansion every year.

Arranging holidays in an embrace with the Starsector is priceless.

Now that's just genious!! Would surely be cool to have this option, I'd just love it. 0% is harsh though, if it's 1 SP PER every defeat.

Also I wanna mention that HimeMikohime is a Legend. Thanks for Java upgrade, to both you and Alex!

Classic Ghosts and Goblins.  With you kill the final boss for the first time, you get it told it was an illusion or trap and you get to replay the whole game at a harder difficulty (on an already Nintendo Hard game).

Very Brutal NES Game. It would be kinda cool if Alex and co. implemented this !

Imagine you fight the Final Boss of Starsector In Level 20 and you finally defeated it Hooray! and you realize its just a false ending simulation and you need a story point for this in order to play New game +. If you don't have any story point you're toast and the Final Boss will corrupt your savefile.

Just Like This When the Final Boss Fooled you:
https://i.kym-cdn.com/photos/images/original/001/926/262/83f.png

In New game + The Final Boss of Starsector is Actually in Level 40 Max Level (You just got Bamboozled!) Its The Toughest Boss Fight But You get the True Ending of the Game and The Best outcome in the Persean Sector. If you lose only once! you will get a super bad ending of the game not only your savefile got corrupted your Starsector Application Exe Game is also corrupted. If you open the exe application of the game you just got jumpscared by the Final Boss of the Game!

Unless you give the [REDACTED] to the Pathers you get the Very Bad ending in the game and the Worst outcome in the Persean Sector.
Even you defeated the Level 40 New game+ Final Boss.

It would be kinda cooler If the Final Boss of the Game had poggers shocked :o face and an interesting dialogue if the Starfarer (The Player) is Also Level 40 Max Level. And also the Final Boss will Heckle, Insult and Humiliate you through dialogue if you use God Mode, Cheated and Savescum.

Pls David Make A poggers shocked :o face in the portrait dialogue for the Final Boss of the Game When The Player is Max Level 40 too!
It would be a very funny cool meme in Starsector Reddit and Discord!

Kinda Like this When the Final Boss is shocked and pointing at the level 40 max player  :

Your game might get popular in Steam if you implement this cool feature!

That is all and Thank you!  :D

And arcade game too.  Could not beat the arcade game (never got past stage 6 with the shield, did it with lance but got sent back to stage 5? because I need shield to fight final boss).  Did beat the NES version, which was a bit easier, after many continues.

The sequel Ghouls and Ghosts, on the other hand, was much easier (both arcade and Sega Genesis).

Will we be able to unlock the Ziggurat and Doritos?

Nope, and also not the Guardian. I think those are the only vanilla ships that are excluded.
Will Guardian tie into some more quests or lore in the future? I think it's a bit odd to leave it out, especially since it now spawns in generic derelict bounty fleets now (unless it was removed and I missed it).

Sim being not an accurate metric for actual combat was kind of annoying so i greatly appreciate this change so i don't get the pain of my ship builds not being as good as i expected and having to get around going back to base eventually to try a new configuration.
The on by default AI officer limit tied to your cores is cute and it gives an use for them on those instances i am just hoarding them like a dragon because i haven't found an use for them yet.
Oh will you be able to simulate stations? Would be nice if you could.

Apropos, the Derelicts could do with a normal capital class.

Very good improvements.  This will help a lot with testing fleets and loadouts.  I see someone else already brought up using commissions to unlock ships as they became available on the military market, so I won't get into that.

Instead, one thought I had was that being able to use blueprint ships in the simulator would be really helpful for the player if they want to test the new blueprint they just found and decide if they want to actually build it or not.  Being able to fight blueprint ships also means you can try fighting your own faction for fun.  If you don't want this to be something that just instantly unlocks the moment the player finds a random cartridge in some backwards ruins, it could require the player own a Heavy Industry building first to become available.
