I think they need to have a more fighter-like AI first, they play too much like frigates only without worrying about colliding into enemies.

Okay, I have to clarify the dev mode thing here. An easier way to control fighters is to cycle through control of your ships with "N" (dev mode only, as this is blatant cheating by skipping the command pod transfer and by allowing fighter control). When you switch to a wing, the first one you switch to will be the "wing leader", and all the other fighters will mimic your actions to stay in a group, and attack the same target you are attacking. If you switch to another ship in the wing you will have solo control, the wing will NOT follow you, and you will not appear on the map (as only the wing leader is represented on the map to prevent the wing being displayed once for every member). While most of the time it is frustrating (like when you are a SINGLE Talon or Wasp xD), but sometimes it can be very interesting (torpedo bomber, or testing a ship you made). I don't think it is possible (read: I don't know at all what I am talking about) to land on a carrier without issuing the order to do so. Also, one other benefit of this is that you can go into autopilot to watch the fighters without the downsides of the finicky "Show Video Feed" option.

Ill go test the dagger bomber ? (I'm not sure if that's there name) out now if you can change ships by pressing N, the problem I had before when pressing ctrl + click was that it would shot the torpedo off straight away.
Also its true that you cant land on the carries with out issuing the order to the wing as it has not been coded in yet.

This is all fun and great and all but the games balance would be thrown off if players could control fighters. Imagine a piranha wing controlled by a player. You could wreak so much havoc among the bigger ships and the only thing that would stand in yer way is extreme flack/pd or interceptors but a player could just avoid those threats entirely way better than the AI does.

Exactly, in campaign, the fighter and bomber ai is worse, those hard earned daggers just go into a FULL FLAK SCREEN WITH NO TORPEDO AND WITH THE ORDER TO RETURN TO CARRIER.
The player is much more smarter than that. I presume. : D

Perhaps make a few missions where you are a wing leader? I would absolutely adore the chance to pilot a Thunder fighter.

when under player control is it possible to park at a carrier for repairs?

Believe me when I say this playing as a Thunder fighter is fun as hell, and right now because its not coded in you cant land on carries, you have to switch to a different ship, or watch the video feed of your fighter wing, and set it to repair its self.

Thunder's are my FAVORITE fighters in fact they for favorite ship they are easily in the top 5 or top 3. now that  i know i need to go enable the Dev mode BRB!
