there is a mod which allowes you to control a head fighter of a squadron.

Thanks - what's the name? The part I wasn't sure was possible was just travelling along during the meta campaign and then being given different mission objectives (make sure at least five supply convoys are able to escape the attack, take out the beam cannon, etc.) when you go into battle, with the AI ships pursuing others.

Thanks for the link, I hope they keep working on it. I see in the comments that Alex doesn't plan to include piloting fighters in vanilla. That's a little disappointing, but at the same time it's nice to see that he knows where to draw the line, which is important for a game as ambitious as this (somethings will have to wait for Starsector 2...).

I'd definitely be some kind of Hegemony aligned character, independent, but with order and the restoration of the old Domain on my character's mind. Maybe some "unsanctioned" special operations division of the Hegemony Navy, ala the Titans from Universal Century, but not frickin' evil.

You can already do that. Just choose a Hound to start with, and occasionally hover a random crew member over the 'jettison' button. ;)

I think calling the Serenity a Hound is giving it far too much credit. The damned thing basically had one light machinegun.
