I tried 12x mining lasers and 2x mining pods on Colossus Mk3, with predictable results  :D

Colossus Mk.3 is so starved of OP compared to weapon slots it has, so I decided to try that out lol.
Surely it couldn't be that bad i thought. But then i checked the wiki and saw it has only 55 OP starved of points is an understatement what the hell?

If it had OP, it would be a hilarious small slot SO boat.

Try it with the Derelict Bastilleon. It's at 60 OP as a destroyer, so you should be able to afford some range boosts(start with escort package and advanced Optics) and maybe a converted hangar with either mining pods or wasps. Slap a Gamma core in that puppy for SP free elite PD mastery, Gunnery implants and target analysis.

I believe the build can also afford 1 or 2 LACs as well, flux is a non issue in this case sense the bastilleon comes with a healthy 250 Flux dissipation.

This one is specially bad because it is a CRUISER a CRUISER with 55 op. and the bastillion a DERELICT DESTROYER has a measly 15 OP of difference between it

Bastillion is also unshielded and made of wet tissue paper (admittedly, so is colossus, but at least it has a shield).

As a 1000+ range missile chewing pd boad that can be deployed en mass with rugged construction. Does the Bastilleon really need shields?

Ol' Colossus III is extremely well-buffed by skills and is technically a Cruiser. There should be some way to make it tick, though I've had *very* bad luck trying it in the past.

You can get burn 9 with industry skill and thus burn 20 with no OP investments. They're acceptable carriers if used with sturdy fighters, since the built-in penalty is less bad than Converted Hangars. 32 DP for a full 8 wings ain't bad, though you're wasting 4 officers on a very questionable craft.

The main problem is anything collapsing on them is Game Over.

3x Herons can do the interlocking PD grid thing. Maybe with Advanced Optics, ITU, and elite Point Defense the humble Mining Laser Colossi can finally cover each others flanks... The Heron beam thing doesn't really work because of their DPS, but because that many overlapping weapon arcs intimidate the enemy AI into submission.

Pirate Atlas with two Mjognirs, two Squalls and nothing else.
TBF this is decent if you have a lot of frontline because the moment even a frigate sneezes in the Atlas direction, it explodes.

Experiences differ, but I can't recall ever being horribly offended or disappointed by having a Colossus III in my fleet.

Spoiler
Vulcans on the 2 rearmost mounts.
LMG (single) on the 2 frontmost corners - they might shoot down a missile, but their main purpose is to punish ships that get too close.
1 light mortar on one of the front mounts - to make sure this ship gets on the front line and puts that armour to use.
Auto-assign weapon groups and ignore.
Decide if you want to spend a story point on it:
If yes, build in Heavy Armour then add Blast Doors. 27 OP left.
If no, add Bulkheads. 24 OP left.
Fighters can be anything that will fit, with the usual caveat of not mixing support with any other type.
Add any left over OP after fighters to caps for shield hp, this ship doesn't really care about vents that much.

It behaves like a budget Mora and soaks up weapons fire reasonably well. Heavy Armour greatly improves this ability, and the negative effect from building it in doesn't really apply to the Colossus because it doesn't have any maneuaverabilty to start with.
This ship will get disabled frequently, just pick it up ater the battle and carry on. Blast Doors are very useful to stop it eating your crew. Efficiency also helps with faster recovery.
If you're still using mostly smaller ships, Insulated Engines might be more of a priority as C3 is a civilian ship (this also means it gets +2 burn from Bulk Transport).
An officer specialised to more defensive abilities can also be very useful. Possibly a good home for a cryo pod pickup who doesn't have your usually preferred skillset.

The main thing is to manage your expectations - it's a converted shoebox that you use a temporary home for your fighters until you find something actually good to replace it.

I'm not sure how "ineffective" it is but I love Monitors built for pure shield focus.  No weapons.  They just dance around dodging big stuff and soaking up little stuff until the enemy either dies from their built-in flak guns (which in itself is hilarious) or they run out of PPT first (because of course I'm giving my boys as much PPT as possible.)  They'll never kill anything of note but they WILL be the last picket ships on the field.  Bring around 8 of them, send them to objectives and then engage whatever looks like a good target as the enemy fleet splits up.  Capital ships can't bring them down because they convert so much flux to soft that they just never drop their shields.

For more funsies, deploy only four at a time and no other ships.  Waste the enemy's time and missiles, then send in your workhorses and clean up the empty, worn out bastards who dared challenge your memery!

I genuinely enjoy running the Atlas Mk.2 for no other reason than it is really *** funny. i will be fighting the world's fattest remnant kill fleet (3 Radients and the rest of the pack) and ill click my onslaught or Executor or whatever my flagship is (Executor/Pegasus is better than the Paragon change my mind) and instead of getting something actually tanky, or fire effective, I whip out the "I-beam sniper" that is the Atlas Mm.2 with 2 gauss cannons and pretty much nothing else. and if that poor bastard isn't jumped by some fast ship, it will just sit there and plink at the enemies shied doing "almost worthwhile damage". Like it has legitimately dished out some outrageously moderate damage against large remnant fleets

or idk, the plasma cannon Sunder

I enjoy Atlas MK.2s if for no other reason than for the challenge of keeping them alive. I like any ship that seems like a bargain but requires the player to overcome a weakness, in order to be properly utilized. It also looks neat.

Before Alex nerfed chainguns and changed skills I used to run bunch of Pather Cerberus with Stacked officers. Was fun.

thanks to my favorite mod, automated commands, I can set the atlas to timid personality or give it a timid officer and ridiculously long-range guns and boom, backline sniper
