Destroyers are no longer garbage and with this thing, they make things go boom really well.
Yup Escort Package is a lot of fun. I'm not sure if it really needs to be nerfed though. The weapon range bonus just means it "borrows" the range of whatever larger ship is next to it. Destroyers are still fairly fragile, so they're still a challenge to keep alive. So it's a bit of a high-risk, high-reward thing. Just using capitals directly is still the safer option, although destroyers have a higher flux/DP ratio so they in theory can have higher offensive power...if they don't die.
I think it does a good job of making destroyers relevant into the late game. It's certainly possible to use destroyers successfully against [REDACTED] now, which greatly widens the possible player fleet compositions.
Nowadays I'm trying to get my support ships into the mix. Since Escort Package just looks for any nearby ship, civilian or not, you can have Atlases near them and they'll boost Escort Package ships just the same. So I start battles with my 200-DP fleet, then once I capture objectives, I deploy my Atlases. I also have ECM on them to help with ECM. They're backline ships anyway so they're not in danger. I threw Converted Hangar on them and some Daggers just for fun, but realistically, they only do a couple of shots before the battle ends. Screenshots attached.
(I'm only just now realizing that Prometheus has a much higher base speed than Atlas, so I should be using them instead. Oops.)
... made some quick improvements, can kinda see it here - watch for it not always turning to the "outermost" target. The change is to just make it consider weapon range, of both itself and the enemies, and not worry about enemies out of either. Not perfect or anything, but should hopefully be an improvement, regardless.

That looks awesome! It looks like the AI is much better being aware of its weapon range and that of nearby enemies, which makes it better at gauging whether or not to dive in. Hope that improvement is for the general AI as well, not just the escort command.
