Yeah, that makes sense; I have a note to take a look at it. It's pretty hard to be sure a frigate isn't a threat because so many of them really are, but it happens at much too long a range for sure, and it probably shouldn't co-opt both ships for this, either.

Will having 0 range fighters on any of the ships help with this issue? Destroyers can spare the OP/DP for converted hangar.

... made some quick improvements, can kinda see it here - watch for it not always turning to the "outermost" target. The change is to just make it consider weapon range, of both itself and the enemies, and not worry about enemies out of either. Not perfect or anything, but should hopefully be an improvement, regardless.

Been having fun with an EP Sunder running HIL / IRLs attached to a Legion / Onslaught. Deletes anything smaller than a cruiser in a large range and compliments the heavy kinetic damage most of my fleet is running.

I see this hullmod getting a serious nerf soon.
+40% range for my sunders and enforcers just for being close to a capital? Yesplz.
Destroyers are no longer garbage and with this thing, they make things go boom really well.

Yup Escort Package is a lot of fun. I'm not sure if it really needs to be nerfed though. The weapon range bonus just means it "borrows" the range of whatever larger ship is next to it. Destroyers are still fairly fragile, so they're still a challenge to keep alive. So it's a bit of a high-risk, high-reward thing. Just using capitals directly is still the safer option, although destroyers have a higher flux/DP ratio so they in theory can have higher offensive power...if they don't die.

I think it does a good job of making destroyers relevant into the late game. It's certainly possible to use destroyers successfully against [REDACTED] now, which greatly widens the possible player fleet compositions.

Nowadays I'm trying to get my support ships into the mix. Since Escort Package just looks for any nearby ship, civilian or not, you can have Atlases near them and they'll boost Escort Package ships just the same. So I start battles with my 200-DP fleet, then once I capture objectives, I deploy my Atlases. I also have ECM on them to help with ECM. They're backline ships anyway so they're not in danger. I threw Converted Hangar on them and some Daggers just for fun, but realistically, they only do a couple of shots before the battle ends. Screenshots attached.

(I'm only just now realizing that Prometheus has a much higher base speed than Atlas, so I should be using them instead. Oops.)

That looks awesome! It looks like the AI is much better being aware of its weapon range and that of nearby enemies, which makes it better at gauging whether or not to dive in. Hope that improvement is for the general AI as well, not just the escort command.

Oh it is wild to see Atlas's actually deployed in combat for more than memery. Do the destroyers get close enough to them to get bonuses? Maybe 2 of those manticores in the screenshot are, I'm not sure.

What ships have you been using as escorts in this manner?

Mostly Sunders, tried Medusas, Manticores.

I think people who use 3 escorts at a time are just way too optimistic about pathfinding.

Also settled on 2 escorts per capital, any more and the uptime falls off a cliff.

Really feel Enforcer and Sunder are the only destroyers to benefit much from it. Maybe Fulgents, but those need omega weapons to be worth using.

Prometheus is indeed much better for the memery than Atlas. It was already almost a worthwhile combat ship with its capital-grade armor/hull/range for 10 DP. S-mod heavy armor and ITU, put a converted hangar with sparks and DTA. Use some railguns and a mauler, and you have a super-enforcer that buffs all your other enforcers.

... not the way I would have imagined some civilian ships would finally get a combat role, but I'll take it :)

Hope that improvement is for the general AI as well, not just the escort command.

The change is specific to the escort command; I don't think this particular approach would work for ships that have unrestricted mobility.

I thought about Fulgents because with all the range bonuses and Energy Coherer they'd have a really good range... but why oh why are they 11 DP? I can't fit that neatly into 120...
