Enhanced Portraits

Replacement profile pics for the vanilla game.

Upscaled x2 and keeping close to the originals but with a little artistic leeway.

These were made with AI assisted tools (workflow details in the spoiler below).

Huge respect and credit to the artist who made the originals for Starsector.

Workflow
They were made by putting the original starsector portrait in img2img with ~0.4 denoising.

I used Arthemy Comics v4 model found here;
https://civitai.com/models/54073?modelVersionId=107847

This LoRA to bring out more detail;
https://civitai.com/models/58390/detail-tweaker-lora-lora

The original portrait was also put into ControlNet's canny processor.
That allows me to raise the denoising (more AI freedom) while still keeping the original structure, as I wanted to keep it vanilla-like.

I made sure to store the settings used (prompt, model, cfg) in the PNG files.
If you throw one in to the PNG Info tab of Automatic1111 (not sure for other GUIs), you can get the specifics for each image.

How did you go about creating these? I am interested in the process. I imagine either blowing them up and digitally painting over them or using AI to fix them up.

Yup spot on - AI enhanced.  There's 130+ images, plus the prompt needs to be tweaked slightly for each.  Overall it took me a couple of days.

As for the details, I made sure to store the settings used (prompt, model, cfg) in the PNG files.  If you throw one in to the PNG Info tab of Automatic1111 (not sure for other GUIs), you can get the specifics for each image.  Was done by putting the original portrait in img2img with denoising of 0.4 (slightly lower on some pics).

Oh and also I put the original portrait into ControlNet's canny processor.  That allows me to raise the denoising (more AI freedom to change things) while still keeping the original structure, as I wanted to keep it vanilla-like.

Hope that helps, thanks for taking an interest

The mod itself could use some cleanup. There are two empty New Folders in there, the photograph of godiva, and the images are all scaled up despite never appearing in the game at that size, so the mod ends up larger and takes slightly longer to load than necessary.

Good call - removed the extra folders+file and resized the images to 256x256 (double vanilla).

Those running on higher resolutions with UI scaling will benefit (I run 4k with 200% UI scaling).

These look INCREDIBLE, thank you! No way I'm ever running a game without this mod from now on. Are you planning on also replacing the various storyline characters with upgraded versions at some point in the future?

I am obviously dumb, to be truthful I didn't understand half of your post. Did you use the programs you linked too and did it cost you money to use them? How about a walk-through of how you did it step by step or a link to get started? I tried googling it, following info on the links you gave but I am overwhelmed, to much info to take in. If you feel I am being unreasonable then just ignore my request.

Just a thought, you should have two versions of your mod on offer. Those for standard? or laptop small screen sizes and those for 4k and the HD sort.

Very kind! Yes at some point when I find the time.  Appreciate the encouragement

Not at all, generative art is new and pretty tricky to understand at first.  Midjourney is great way to try it out without much commitment. You will probably need to watch a YouTube video to learn how to get started.  It is free, but limited I think to a certain number of images - after which you would need to pay a subscription I believe.

What I do is a bit more complicated, because I generate it myself, rather than using an online tool like Midjourney.  Generating images yourself gives you more control, plus it's completely free - apart from the GPU energy used.  If you want to do that you would need a decent graphics card, and to be reasonably tech savvy.  I can't do a step-by-step, as there is a lot to it and honestly you'd be better served by the high quality tutorials already on YouTube.  Start by looking up tutorials on how to install and use Automatic1111.  Once you have it installed and have made your first few images, my previous comment with the explanation of how I made these images will make a lot more sense.

Re two versions; would be happy to if anyone reports an issue.  The mod only uses ~11mb more than vanilla though, so I can't see it having much impact.

Unfortunately the mod download had to be removed, as it conflicts with the forum rules regarding AI generated assets.

I have great respect for the people who made this game, so I wouldn't want to do anything they didn't approve of.

I'll leave this thread up.  Perhaps when the law regarding AI generated content is settled the rules will be reconsidered.

Thanks to everyone who checked it out, and especially those who replied with kind words.

Official Decision;

you can post your work to the unofficial discord and to any of the mod sites.
the insane, shortsighted censorship of the tools one is allowed to use does not apply everywhere.

you did amazing work that could not have been done by hand - proving how idiotic the decision is.

You're absolutely welcome to voice your opinion, but a certain level of civil behavior is required to participate in this community. I generally try to give more leeway when the behavior is directed at me to avoid even the appearance of it being in some way personal, but nonetheless, please consider this an official warning.

IMO it does - it's just a warning.

(For future reference, please note that publicly discussing/debating moderator decisions is against the forum rules; if you have a specific concern then a PM to a moderator is probably the way to go.)
