"Mission given by academician Alviss Sebestyen, affiliated with the independents.
Recover an instrument package from a probe in the ... system."

That's it.

I mean, even those mission about probes/derelict ships located near the center or some distance away from the center etc. are hit or miss.
But here you have nothing, except: "It's somewhere in the system, good luck with that."
Cmon Alex, making this part of the main-quest-line is just an incentive for save scumming.

(Also, mine was hidden in a nebula at the border of a big two-star-system. Could it have been worse? :D )

I once had to search for a game-week+ to find one of those. The fact that they can get attached to random clouds or whatnot well outside the planetary belt is kinda un-fun, for the reward. I think this was meant to get players to play with the Neutrino Detector... which needs a revamp, imo. I'll write that up.

Isn't that the mission they give you the Neutrino Detector for?

It's not part of tutorial, so I'm rather sure that you already have the Neutrino Detector at this point.
Also, neither you're getting volatiles when you accept the mission, nor is the Neutrino Detector mentioned in the mission description in the intel-tab. So if there is a connection between this mission and the Neutrino Detector, it should be told to the player.

Then I don't know, I remember there being a mission from the academy about finding something hidden in a system where they do tell you to use the Neutrino Detector and if you don't have it from a character skill you get the Detector ability for free but I don't know if it's that one.

That mission will give you the Neutrino Detector if you don't already have it, yes.

(If you have the Sensors skill, it'll still flip the tag that means you keep Neutrino Detector if you respec, IIRC.)

In terms of "part of the main-quest-line" I'll just point out that you can turn those down (or abort afterwards) and do a different generic Sebestyen mission instead. Only thing that matters for this part is getting to +50.1 personal rep.

True, that. But it's a frustrating mission design atm. If Neutrino Detector was fixed up like in the proposals, then no biggie, it's a new mechanic introduced that leads to more fun, and heck, it provides a template for the same mission type being given as an Exploration mission, which would add a bit of spice there.

This is especially funny because, if I remember correctly, once you reach the proble the text says it's "exactly where Sebestyen told you to find it".

Guys i found the probe quite easily but then I'm told to go to the nearest jump point to intercept scavenger fleet... I've been making circles around all the jump points in the system and nothing. Where do I find this fleet?

I think it gives you information about which Jump Point the fleet will try to reach.

It tells you 'nearest jump point', but - much like the way the game is supposed to navigate you to the nearest jump point when you target a star system as your destination - which jump point is considered 'nearest' is effectively random.

On top of that, if the system has any potentially hostile fleets in it (such as remnants, or those scavengers that can toggle themselves over to pirates), the fleet you're looking for can just wander off trying to either flee or chase down such opponents.

In theory, it should still be around somewhere... but there's really no guarantee where. Keep looking, mostly around jump points, and hopefully it'll turn up eventually. >.<

Well that was the case, there was a lot of activity in that system and in the end I just abandoned this quest, took same one and it was in another system but it went smooth.

I swear, if you select a system from the Hyperspace map it will almost always send you to the jump point furthest away from your current position. That seems rather like the opposite of what you'd want.

It works a lot better when you go to a specific part of the system, though, then it will usually select the closest jump point to your target.

I do think the neutrino detector could do to be a little more useful. The mechanic itself is fun and interesting, but the extra sensor range is rarely enough to be useful at all, so it's extremely rare that it's actually helpful for finding anything. I remember having to reload a dozen times to find a large Derelict fleet that was in the same system as me before the bounty (which had 60 days left) expired.
