Ship Naming!
« on: February 18, 2012, 08:37:47 AM »

Hey all, just thought I would see who names their ships, if any.
My current naming scheme is small, and I don't have any frigates yet,
but with any luck I can change that soon.
Anyway, here is the list of names (and the theme) along with the hull.

Main Ship, Assault, Dominator (My favorite conqueror at the time of naming)
--- Genghis

Assault, Hammerhead (Asian Conquerors)
--- Timur
--- Atilla

Fire Support, Enforcer (European Conquerors)
--- William
--- Charlemagne
--- Alexander
--- Napoleon

Carrier, Condor (Conquistador)
--- Balboa
--- Nunez
--- Pizzaro
--- Cortez

And that's all. Each of my naming schemes refers to a specific layout of ship,
so I know exactly what I am sending out when I use specific orders.
Credit to my dad for around 1/3 of these, he was my reference for conquerors
because of his knowledge of European and Latin American history.

EDIT: From this point onward, I will list my improved fleet, which I have been improving almost solidly over the past 1-2 days.
I absolutely love midwinter break, anyway, on to the ships!

Assault, Onslaught
--- Genghis

Support Carriers, Venture
--- Cortes
--- Balboa
--- Pizzaro

Balanced, Enforcer
--- Attila
--- Timur
--- Maurya
--- Ashoka

Balanced, Lasher
--- William
--- Napoleon
--- Alexander
--- Charlemagne

Along with a generous compliment of 17 Broadsword wings. :D
Nothing is better than performing the spectacular Broadsword Brigade, which is described in more detail at the post below.

I usually don't think too hard about names but I usually stick to European and Norse mythos. With a little more thought I could probably come up with a set for all the different classes of ships.

Capital(Gods of War)
Odin - Paragon-Class
Tyr - Conquest-Class
Agrona - Odyssey-Class
Thor - Onslaught-Class

Cruisers(Lords of the Hunt)
Woden - Dominator-Class
Skadi - Aurora-Class
Diana - Falcon-Class
Artemis - Eagle-Class

Destroyers(The Morrigan)
Nemain - Sunder-Class
Badb - Medusa-Class
Macha - Hammerhead-Class

I went with themes for my ships, all have the "USS" as their prefix:

Tempest-Class Attack Frigates:
Conviction
Retribution
Vegeance II (lost the first one to a pirate armada)
Pride
Power

Hyperion-Class Strike Frigate:
Lucas (my last name and my flag ship)

Medusa-Class Destroyer:
Brightheart
Blackheart
Steelheart

Sunder-Class Destroyer:
Ironheart

All cruisers are patriotically named.
Falcon-Class LAC:
Justice

Eagle-Class Attack Cruiser:
Liberty
Integrity

Aurora-Class Balanced Cruiser:
Constitution II (there was a real one)
Patriot

Apogee-Class Balanced Cruiser:
Freedom

Odyssey-Class Balanced Battlecruiser (Sherriff Nottingham was the nemisis of Robin Hood):
Robin Hood
Nottingham

Onslaught-Class Battleship (decided to go in pairs, each is the opposite of the other):
Salvation
Damnation
Nox
Apollo
Demon
Angel

Paragon-Class Battleship:
Hurricane
Tornado
Arbiter (goes with an Astral Carrier I captured in the same fleet)

Astral-Class Elite Carrier:
Maelstrom (secondary flagship)
Typhoon
Prophet (goes with Arbiter)

I think thats all of them...

I tend not to rename my ships. I like the idea that in this age of lost technology, ships are esoteric things, given quasi-spiritual significance to them by their crew; renaming the ship is bad luck.

Of course, when I bagged my first Paragon, I couldn't really resist giving it a better name. Named it after my favorite EV Nova ship (a game, by the way, that all Starfarer people, players, devs, should play)-- the ISS Unrelenting.

The idea is that the various tech levels represent different - not "better" - ways to do things.

I have only name one. And I called it PeteMaster. I must say it's completely satisfying to have it report repairs and stuff. :)  Need to name all of them. I'd probably do god names as well (from various cultures). Aaaaaaaaand not sure what else. Legendary birds are fun. Roc, phoenix, thunderbird.  :)

How so? 12 major gods, or 24 if you count Romans, plus at least 50 minor gods.
