Im a noob and i want a noobish difficulty setting
« on: October 04, 2013, 05:00:42 AM »

Why? Because im always attacked by faster blobs of pirate fleets and im always destroyed. Can someone tell me where and what to change to make the beginnings A LOT EASIER? I started about 10 new games all ended by ragequit and erasing the saves... i hate it... Why the pirates fleets on the beginning must be so big?

Normally you are the fastest fleet around at the beginning of the game. You should be able to evade all bigger fleets and only attack lone ships, this one is good prey:

After you've won abattle your fleet is slower for some time because it picks up the loot, so don't attack if bigger enemy fleets are nearby.

Another good tactic is to hide within allied fleets, just keep your ship under the big yellow fleet at the spawn location and strike from there.

Oh, and set taken damage to half in the options menu if it isn't already.

A noob question... Can i customize firing arcs? Because i managed to get Brawler but his arcs are too wide, and i cant get in the adequate positions to allow all guns fire in the target. Tutorial should cover things like this also...

You cannot. Most of the time firing all guns on one target produces too much Flux to handle anyway.
Arcs facing to the side or back are perfect for point-defense weapons though - weapons that shoot down incoming missiles or fighters ;)

That one confused me a little too at the start actually, but I'm pretty sure that's because of another Star- game that had a similar-looking ship design screen  :P

Damn... I would love to change the firing arcs, because Brawler have only 4 hardpoint mounts (no mounts on sides or back) with no turrets, that lock guns to very narrow arc of firing. I was hoping there is a possibility to change that so i can concentrate more those "outer" hardpoints

I dunno, is it just me or has the AI become more stupid since the last release?

I sat there for a good 15 mins watching two Lashers go at it. Just when one of them had the leg up, they'd disengage and go vent flux. o_O

I've come to rely on the AI to be pretty decent when it comes to frigate combat because I'm lousy at it. A one on one frigate duel should see me emerge victorious since damage is set to half. Not sure what the problem is, but I'm having a much harder time getting started this time around.

And it doesn't help that on the rare occasion that I do manage to take down a pirate fleet loaded with supplies, that I'm so loaded with supplies my burn goes down to one, and I get mobbed by all the other local pirate fleets.

Not very encouraging. :(

I think the AI relies a lot more on crew experience. Elite frigates are really, really clever.

And yeah the start is way too tough for new players. Mount and Blade had the exact same problem - giant wall of difficulty you have to climb over but once you've won your first 2-3 battles suddenly it's a much better difficulty curve. It might be a lot easier to handle if the game started you off with a freighter in addition to your frigate so you don't lose most of the supplies you loot if you manage to win because you can't carry nearly that many.

Sorry, for some reason I thought you were talking about a Lasher  ???

Brawler is a tough lil ship to fly! In my experience they do well slugging it out vs a destroyer type ship (or slower stuff like freighters/small carriers/buffalo 2's) but they're a bit too slow to fight frigates.
And you're right, the outer two hardpoints' weapons tend to shoot straight past if you're up against a frigate... unless you mount those with (homing) missiles ;)
It's all about having the right set-up for the job. Chasing down small fry generally isn't the Brawler's!

Anyway, I agree it's a bit of a rough start right now. Really have to pick your targets well/get lucky for the first couple fights.

What is the deal with the burn penalty right after combat? My burn is reduced to 1 for about 10 seconds before it returns to normal. Anyone else getting this?

About the brawler, its job is usually either for pounding it out with ships larger than itself, OR for attaching it as an escort to a larger ship to play PD, give it 2 dual flak cannons and its rather effective at that, when it has it's back against a larger ship like it would as an escort its also capable of not having to worry about its forward only shield as the larger ship would likely either destroy any missiles that get behind it, or the missiles would ignore the brawler and go for the larger target instead. These two things can make the brawler especially devastating against fighters and missiles. Also it never hurts to have two more heavy autocannons floating nearby your ship with all high explosive weaponry :D

Also I totally had the name BEFORE the cruiser.

It is intended.

Perfect. So it's intended for you to get mobbed by 10 other fleets after you attack one? I fail to see the sense in that design decision.

Pretty sure it's a bug that you also get the penalty if you escape, just reported it.

In general, you now have to keep your surroundings in mind before attacking a fleet. It also means that larger fleets can cover smaller ones in the vicinity. I'd call that a good thing.
