The question of why do something so crazy is best answered by history. Humans have proven them capable of great feats when they are reaching for the seemingly impossible.

We need a new goal. A new frontier. Mars is a pretty cool one. You must admit.  :)

Asteroid mining and comet hopping seems a good way to travel, think about it.

Land on a moving asteroid and park up, no need to waste fuel, able to mine the minerals on the asteroid for fuel or whatever

Problem solved ;)

They said one way trip, and the colony is never gonna be self sufficient, so do they plan to sustain it from permenantly? What happens if and when its no longer feasable?

It's obviously a risky endeavor. At least you'll go down in history. As either a crazy, or an awesome explorer.

As either a crazy, or an awesome explorer.
Crazy and awesome are mutually exclusive? Well, crap. Now I'll have to pick one or the other, but which one..... Or is that just in conjunction with explorer?

The ideas behind this whole "let's colonize other planets" project are working, but I just don't see why it's a good idea to go for another planet when we still have so many problems here. Maybe however we should go to another planet, perhaps the problems will be solved then.
Humanity cannot stay on Earth forever and unless any global catastrophes happen, at some point in the future we will settle down on another planet. Preferably earth-like, because terraforming is a lot of work.

Just thoughts throw this in:

When the first men went to the moon, they had no assurance that they'd come back home. That is to say, they did not know if it'd be possible for them to leave the moon - until they knew that they would be able to leave for all intents and purposes, their going to the moon was a sucicide mission.

That just goes to show how far humanity is willing to go for the sake of exploration. Well, at least I hope that's why, and they didn't have some more important and perhaps malicious intent.

well we can actually stay on earth forever...
just not when we keep on multiplying x).
just a couple days ago i heard an artist talk about how kids should take pills in order to stop their growth.
for the simple reason that when everybody is just fifty centimeters we can sustain like four times the amount of people.
imagen having people of 50 centimeters being send to mars. they need less food and space ,so it will be easier to sustain a colony with them.

ps. dont forget cancer, having just 25% of the normal amount of cells also reduces his chance to occur.

You actually.... WANT to stay on ONE SINGLE planet in the entire universe?

Pretty sure that ESA is a reliable source in this case :).

Might be easier if we had brain in jar technology.

Heck, replacing the respiratory and digestive systems would lighten the load and complexity of these missions a lot. The human body is an immensely complicated thing for the mindnumbingly simply things that it needs to do.

well, it would be a long time to see all the latest movies. I see we need hundreds times the speed of light data transmission, then I'll go!

What's this about transmitting data faster than the speed of light? =}

http://scitechdaily.com/nanometer-scale-material-capable-of-straightening-and-speeding-up-light-waves/
(tl;dr- scientists created a material that allows light to pass through it near-infinitely fast. If they can scale it up, it has potential applications in computer processors and communication technologies)

Transmitting data off our planet would still be limited by the speed of light, though.... for now, anyway.

At least we'd get 80's shows if we can get a TV to Mars...
