basically make some weapons not used against fighters by the AI (even on autofire)

would be helpful in things like hellbore or TPC

yeah that

mainly made this suggestion cuz I'm making a personal mod that turns most weapons to slow as hell firing (for the WWII style naval artillery feeling) and I don't wanna waste a 15 second reload time on a wasp....

Plasma cannon versus talon fighter , it's the only way to be shure.

I support this idea , on a similar note , could we change the ai for fighters so it doesn't commit suicide by attacking capital ships and getting torn to shreds by PD.

But than again, you could turn autofire off on flux/cooldown, monster eating, weapons until you have target for them and turn them on when you mark your target... Get more involving  ;D

Huh.  Sometimes, yeah.  Sometimes, though, plasma cannon vs fighters is awesome; for example, with elite crew and some points in gunnery implants, I've seen autofire snipe down entire fighter wings with a single burst from a turreted plasma cannon.  It can't do that reliably, but it can reliably kill at least one fighter per salvo - and that's a trade I'm usually more than willing to make.

Now, see also my suggestion about per-variant user-settable AI targetting priorities / hints.  If that were implemented, you could just set this yourself on appropriate weapons.

How about "IGNORE_FIGHTERS" instead?  It's less wordy.

Good ideas. I love both flags - don`t use against fighters and don`t use against ships.

This mainly will be needed with larger and slower missiles. If these flags also will prohibit missiles from retargetting fighters - this will be even better.

Hm.  Not 100% sure, but doesn't the strike flag do this, particularly in combination with the use vs. frigates flag?
(Don't recall the exact flag names offhand, but I'm sure you can look them up.)

Doesn't help with ignore ships, though - for the listed case of point defense - I'd much rather have some in-game way of telling my PD weapons "only attack missiles" or "only attack missiles and fighters, prioritizing fighters" or various other combinations; having such behavior baked into the weapons could get annoying.

it could, but then it's also gonna make the ships strike force and respond to strike orders along with the likes of bombers, in addition of whatever other AI stuff you might run into

I like this idea. Having that level of customization sounds very useful, especially with certain dual role ships where some weapons are designed for Strike capability and you don't want the AI wasting flux using them against smaller ships.

you might want to be careful with the ATTACK_ONLY flag otherwise youre going to end up with weapons like the Trebuchet missile in Freespace 2 which AI didnt fire at all thanks to confused flags which stated target had to be bomber AND capital.....as you can imagine there was no such a ship so AI just didnt fire it...
