If we could see the originals without the stripes, I'd be willing to do a more detailed demonstration about how to go about fixing them up.  Lights are a difficult subject, right now they're coming across as a muddy blur.

I'd really appreciate that. Here's the unedited screenshot from BSF Ship Maker:

edit: Here's the .psd, if you have photoshop: http://www.mediafire.com/?bko3wnbmo067o50

edit2: Here's my current method, scribbled down at about 3am. If you can't figure some of this out, likely neither can I, haha.

Code
create outlines layer, blur with 1% x 3
paint is neut gray with hue red, saturation maxed, multiply opacity 100*
details stay hard lines, no blur
lights in orange, dark/mid/light
desaturate non-main panels selectively
burn outer edge dark bits, flux vanes, nobbly bits etc.

NP, I'll give it a go and return the PSD so you can see my strategies in the work :)

OK, here's my edit, attached is the PSD with layers intact.  Should get viewed against a space background to see how it blends :)

Couple of things, Xeno.

I believe he intended for most of the metal to be green, on account of the metal itself being green, whereas yours is mostly grey.

Second, your paint stripes (while positioned quite well) are too washed out and look more pink than red.

Otherwise, this is the direction the ships needed to head in.

The gray's perceptual; if we remove the stripes, it's clearly green:

As for the stripes, I agree that they don't work, but if they're made stronger, they just obliterate the form:

Perhaps with a white stripe at the paint edges, or something like this:

IDK though; I'm not a really big fan of stripes on things that aren't in line with the form; like real-world camouflage, they tend to obliterate the shape. There's a reason racing stripes are all straight down the cars ;)

I think the whole reason the stripes are there is to obscure the shape, I like it both for looks and it's practical usage.

I'm not the author though, I have no idea what he intended.

I agree, it's the author's choice. Personally, I don't like to do it, at least not on game art; while the concept's perfectly valid, I'd rather have players see all the details I spent so much time on.  But that's up to wishgranter, it's his/her stuff :)

I'm saying this as a person with no spriting knowledge whatsoever, but the sprites I like best are the first that xeno posted, the ones with the blacklining fixed. I like both the red stripes and the bright green color.

Thanks for the input guys (especially xenoargh), it's really appreciated. I suppose at a certain point I have to make an artistic decision and choose how it's gonna be despite the pros and cons. But first, Guild Wars 2 until my eyes bleed.

Stay tuned.

Charr rawrrrrs

anyway, I can't tell for sure, but it seems accelerated ammo feeders don't work for screamer cannons :O but dat muzzle flash, i like it

Might need a bit more point defence, or some way to make screamers work as decent pd :P

seems interesting thought ^.^
