Mule Balance
« on: August 14, 2012, 02:16:59 PM »

I feel that the Mule class ship (when compared to dedicated freighters like the tarsus) has a bit too much cargo capacity. The Mule is capable of carrying almost as much fuel and cargo, is better armed, and is only a few thousand more credits than it's purely civilian counterpart.  I can't really imagine ever using the dedicated freight ships when this thing is the Millennium Falcon by comparison.

Does it have a higher fuel cost?

If the Mule is the Millenium Falcon, what's the Venture?

its the little brother of the venture. In other words it has the same outlandish cargo capacity compared to everything else in the game.

The venture is a star galleon. The mule gets 2.5 per L/Y while the tarsus gets 2.2. The tarsus goes 45 in combat and 122 out of combat while the mule goes 40 and 120. Again, hardly noticeable considerations when you've got a ship that's target practice vs. a ship that can go toe to toe with scout parties.

Edit: The Buffalo (1) goes 50 in combat and 125 out of combat getting 1.3 fuel per l/y while having the same cargo capacity as the tarsus, and less fuel/personnel than either of the other freighters.
Further edit: the Mule has double the armor, and significantly more hull hitpoints. It has less flux capacity, but better dissipation.
I'm not saying that a major nerf is in order, possibly even a buff to the other cargo ships instead, but once economy is implemented (silly to be balancing things for unimplemented features I suppose... but) there's going to be virtually no reason not to scrape that extra 3k together and just buy the mule.

Slightly off-topic, but I just had a nostalgia trip. If anyone's ever played the original Escape Velocity (a PPC mac game only, as far as I'm aware, although there is a TC mod for EV:Nova that will let you play it on windows or OS X), your comparison of the Mule to the Tarsus reminds me of the relationship of the Argosy to the Light Freighter. The Argosy had a little less cargo capacity than the light freighter, but was better in almost every other way- it was a decent combat ship and a common-ish pirate vessel.

More on-topic, I really haven't used either, so I couldn't say one way or another. I find it hard to use anything but high-tech, since it fits my preferred playstyle perfectly.

You guys are overlooking the Gemini. It has as much cargo space as a mule, is faster, holds more fuel, takes less fuel/LR, has more flux dissipation, more efficient shields, PD drones, 2 medium ballistic slots, (which don't have to be PD because of it's drones,) and finally, a flight deck.
True, it has less ordinance points and armor, but that is pretty much it. By itself the mule might be a little better, but the flight decks certainly make the gemini a better ship to have in your fleet. So the mule is not unbalanced.
Oh, and the tarsus has a burn drive, which is one of the best hull mods for a freighter to have I think.

The Mule gets Maneuvering Jets...

Which in the next update will equal burn drive I think and give it superb fluidity of movement

Whereas burn drive locks down the tarsus and condor

But I digress, the Mule is going to be hard to get when the campaign goes in properly.
