I need real help with excel, guys.....
« on: June 11, 2012, 12:01:16 PM »

So, i thought of using excel with the .csv files, since openoffice always seems to convert 0.2 into 2000-02-02, but the damn thing (excel) always puts everything in a mumbo-jumbo order, and nothing in the organized fashion i expect it to be in. Anybody got help?

And please, cut the OT chatter on this one, will you (once it starts)

I would just use text edit or a similar program, like notepad. its much less hassle, although it can be a little bit tricky sometimes.

Wouldn't it be easier to set the formatting on openoffice instead of bothering with excel?

Someone, somewhere in the forums, said that the proper way to open the .csv files in OpenOffice is setting it up like this.

Which makes it all nice and (fairly) easy to read.

The problem I had with OpenOffice (using the correct formation) is that whenever I tried to put an value, such as say 0.3, instead of writing 0.3 in the column, it writes it like this: 2003-03-03

Why can't it work properly for me?

Because you don't know how to use it. (neither do I)

Read a manual.

You need to set the column/row/cell/whatever to be number formatted instead of date formatted.

Think you can just right-click and open a properties dialog. Don't have it in front of me, though.

If your having trouble with excel post a screenshot of what it is doing. When I open the csv files excel does it correctly right off the bat, so perhaps you have a setting messed up, but without knowing what it is doing, we can't really figure out what is wrong.

About downloading open office and/or using notepad

-if you own/or *have* *cought*..*cought*.. MS Excel you may not really wanna download and use Open office, just for Starfarer (not even me guys.. seriously.. just.. no  :-X )
- and notepad can make a mess of things (works good for codex though..)

So.. I forgot which kind soul already told me this, when I was wondering the same question.. but because I tend to reinstal/format my disk once every while - I kept a backup of the process..

About excel not formating your .csv correctly I can help with that..

First open your controlpanel (or whatever its called, I don't use it in english either so..)

National and language settings (where you can tell the computer what format to display dates and times in..)

the Format tab.

Hit the additional options button down at the bottom left.

There you get a new window pop up telling you what your decimal sign is, how many decimals to display after the sign, and stuff like that.

The 8th option from the top is what you want.

Change that to a comma and excel will format the files correctly.

Unfortunatly, If you already use the comma as a decimal sign you will have to be careful when writing numbers.

It's not perfect, but it works

I haven't figured out a way to tell excel to permanently use , as a divider yet..

Hope it helps (it works), cheers.

You should probably be using libreoffice instead of openoffice btw, its essentially the newer version of the same open source office tool.

You read my mind, Matt. Upgradecap, I'm very surprised you're wasting any time at all on OpenOffice ever since that entire project forked and the new LibreOffice's features & bugfixes left OO in the dust.
