Topographic data
« on: December 27, 2024, 12:05:06 AM »

Getting topographic data after you've unlocked all the other abilities in "hyperspace topography" is very underwhelming. It's a minor cash reward you get much later after some game-changing abilities. It's a consolation prize you get when there's no more abilities to unlock, but it's completely unrelated to the others and nearly irrelevant by the time you get it.

I suggest giving the player topographic data at every milestone in hyperspace topography. This way you're always getting that data as a side bonus, which would make the repeatable data at the end feel less out of place compared to the other unlocks. The cash would also be more relevant at those early milestones.

What if topographic data could instead have practical uses? Like you could use one when exploring to reveal slipstreams around you should you end up somewhere remote from your colonized realm. Or it could increase burn when in hyperspace a little for some time

Yeah, the 50k at that point in the game is meaningless.

There is also the problem that "hyperspace topography" essentially incentivizes you to start the game, take a Dram and then just mindlessly fly in slipstreams to get the abilities unlocked. Since if I dont purposefully farm it like that, then I end up having all gates active and most of the sector explored before I get the slingshot skill. (even though I scan every magnetic field and gas giant I come across). A counter to this would be to scale the amount of points you get for the slipstream travel by fleet size  and sensor strength. (Currently the sensor strength buffing hullmod is pretty much useless)

I think it's a neat little item that forms a little stack in your inventory. Not especially important, but it's a neat little tracker of how much data you've collected.

what if money mattered?
Money does matter, until you get a commission, then you have enough income that it doesnt matter anymore.
"Ruthless Sector" Mod tries to address this as does "Ashes of the Domain". AotD especially solves it rather well, since it adds several limiters besides money to you.
The problem here is mostly that the game is trowing a reward scaled to the early game at you, when you are already in the late game. So its a rather easy solution to throw the rewards at you instead in the early game and not wait until the late game.

truth be told i made my own mod to solve this issue...
The amount of money gained from colonies, losing ships to competent Core World enemies. And the salary as well as expenses done on goods serve as a quite competent limiter to how rich the player can become...

I need to stop being so rude about it though. I would like to apologise to you, and also the developer of the game if they're reading this. I have somewhat realised that I have been too aggressive in my pursuit of change
