Maybe I'm missing something but what's a scenario where you'd want to move slowly for a longer period of time in friendly space? Going through an asteroid field is maybe 2 seconds long.

I mean, obviously QoL stuff is always nice but some things are just extremely not important. What would the settings menu look like if we had 15 toggles for random things. And this is something Alex talked about multiple times.

- Sensor profile multipliers are applied after the +1000 for an active transponder, so intentionally running through an asteroid belt is a way to be (somewhat) stealthy without risking a faction relations penalty if a patrol stumbles upon your fleet.
- Several Core systems have configurations of asteroids, colonies, and jump points such that map-window move commands are fairly likely to send your fleet through a lot of asteroids. Isirah, Magec,* and Thule are particularly bad for this.
- Main-window move commands interact poorly with press-and-hold 's' to move slowly as main-window move commands treat 's' as 'stop,' but flicking back and forth between the main window and the map tab for minor movements is somewhat inconvenient and going dark just to avoid asteroids when there's likely a patrol nearby or on its way to the area is often inadvisable, especially if you're not set up as a stealth fleet and just want to do some opportunistic scavenging near some asteroids.

* Not that it's really relevant since nothing there requires you to have an active transponder.

Don't bother trying to move slowly through asteroids. That just causes more, guaranteed damage, instead. You are going to lose supplies either way. You just choose whether you wish to have a chance of losing a chunk supplies or the guaranteed result of losing a similarly large chunk of supplies due to burning maintenance costs while not moving.

Hold S while holding left click prevents stopping while maintaining slow speed.

Still a bad interaction - fly-to-cursor is very awkward with free look and holding 's' while doing so still makes you stop very quickly if you release the LMB for any reason.

Also, personally, I detest "press and hold mouse button indefinitely" as a control scheme.

Having to keep the key pressed is very annoying indeed... It'd be like not having toggle for crouching in any other game.

but some things are just extremely not important.

When it's annoying to the point that you end up choosing to just ram into asteroids and take damage because keeping the key pressed is tiring on the finger, it's not "extremely not important". It's doubly worse for players that don't use Speed Up Time.

What would the settings menu look like if we had 15 toggles for random things.

What kind of argument is that even... 1 toggle is not 15 toggles, and even if there were 15 toggles, how would that be an issue? It's a settings menu, its only purpose is to have options in it.

Am I the only person who thinks asteroid collisions shouldn't be a thing at all?

The only real world example of an asteroid belt we've seen is so sparse, actually encountering one while passing through is like winning the lottery if you're not specifically aiming for it. Given the low average albedo, you could be in the middle of the thickest part of our asteroid belt and not see a single rock.

I agree with you, serves no purpose other than to punish players for visiting Magec.

It was impact on your drive bubble, which can be as large as a dwarf planet.

Tho ship impact should indeed be removed

You don't need to hold the LMB.  Just click.  'a' also reengages autofly.

Sadly you DO need to hold the mouse button if you're also holding S.

A works fine, you can press A then hold S and the fleet will keep flying, but S is the shortcut for Stop if you have no course set.  With no course set, if you don't hold the button, your fleet just stops.  Sometimes we even want that.

I suspect you'd have to make it the fiddly interaction of "start holding S, press LMB so it knows you want a slow move this time, keep holding S" ?

Honestly a toggle for "move slowly" that isn't also turning off your transponder might be useful, occasionally, but it would take up space on the bar...

The current system works ok for me at the moment.  I can see the merit in changing it, but -usually- if you want to fly to a place you can tab open the map, right click the place, hit A, and then press S when necessary, adjusting course with held LMB sometimes.
