Add an "Ignore target" assignment.
« on: March 11, 2024, 08:45:24 AM »

See title.

Just like there is Avoid, Harras, Fighter Strike, Eliminate, Engage.

I want to be able to have a target be ignored. I don't want my ships to avoid that random kite or wolf. I just want to stop seeing my hammerheads or eradicators deciding to hopelessly chase after some gremlin anytime I run out of command points.

I suffer from the same problem. Not just gremlins, ships like monitor without offensive punch should be able to ignored.

That would be the main use for me.  I have used Avoid once or twice against Monitors just to stop my ships from attacking them, but I do not want my ships to avoid them so much as I want them to ignore the obnoxious wall with no offense while they attack the real threats.

Would be really funny if Alex added this and taught the AI commander how to use it on player Monitors.

Monitors should be mobile shields for bigger ships mainly for capitals though, not diverting and soaking damage for no given reason.

I would expect that.

Of course, if the result is everyone avoids Monitor until it is the last one standing, then Monitor would be useless, and it would need a change to make it more useful.

It would be like the second version of Sabot (wide shotgun) where everyone dropped shields to take few fragments on armor or hull for almost zero damage.

I think Monitor could actually be quite capable even without the AI being broken. It's a ship that can fit a pair of Reaper torpedos, plus EMR and missile spec, and is very durable. The play would seem to be, then, to maneuver beside or behind an enemy ship, and unload on it when it turns its shield away or is overfluxed. The two universal mounts can make it extremely expensive to ignore entirely, while allowing it to still be very difficult to outright kill.

To clarify my previous statement. I envisioned it more as a don't chase/don't make primary target command. It's not like ships would stop firing at marked targets to ignore or act like they didn't exist at all and not face shields towards them or whatever.

So much this. It cracks me up when ships wander into the line of fire of my big guns, but once in a while it works out well. It'd be great if you could set a monitor to escort a bigger ship, and it'd jump in front when the big ship is getting pounded or needs to vent.
