Combat always freezes the game on steam deck

Been playing the game on the steam deck. Once I got all the controls mapped and to my liking it is far more playable than I expected. Runs at a stable 60 FPS etc. Trackpads give the same level of control as a mouse.

Problem is in combat. The moment opposing ships encounter each other and start shooting the game freezes. No mods installed, running latest linux version of the game. Was wondering where I should start looking to solve this?  Resolution defaults to 1280-800

Hmm. "Freezes" as in "keeps showing the same screen and nothing else happens", or does it actually crash?

If it's a crash, you'd want to look in the log for a stack trace and the error. If it's a freeze, then your best bet would be to try to get a stack trace to see what it's doing when it's hanging.

I can report the same problem. Crashed to desktop about 5 seconds into combat.

The graphics froze and all sound stopped I could still move the mouse for a few seconds before it went to the desktop, it still had the game cursor but nothing was reacting.
Log is attached, there was no core dump.

From the header it looks to maybe be a problem in the Radeon driver. Also sent to Oracle in case someone over there is bored.

Appreciate the clarification for those of us on the Deck! I've submitted a bug report to the Steam Deck forums with links to these threads to see if we can get the driver updated.

I am encountering the same problem. What's weird is that mesa are supposed to have fixed this problem already : https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/mesa/mesa/-/issues/5754
Although in this case it seems they were using the radeonsi driver instead of the zink driver used on the deck.
It's really sad because the game runs otherwise very well and is fun on the deck.

Let's hope a solution will come quick,whether from valve,the game or mesa.

This is really sad one of the games I was most exited about playing on the steam deck. Did someone tried to play the windows version using proton?

Yeah it's really sad because the game plays quite nice on deck.
I have tried the windows version and it also crashes in combat,although less often but it has really bad performance wheras the linux version runs smoothly

I have this version installed (21.3.8) and it sadly doesn't work. Though it is to be expected since the bug was apparently fixed during the end of last year (https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/mesa/mesa/-/issues/5754) so we'd need like the 21.10 or 21.12 vesion

I've gone and hit notify on this thread - can confirm it happens to me too, unfortunately. Hoping a fix is forthcoming, or at least a workaround on the user side!

I cant find the bug report on the forums can you please provide the link to the bug report? And I was thinking if it is possible to just update the mesa drivers manually? Since its just arch linux that is running on steam deck maybe its possible to install the newest version of the mesa drivers. It would be necessary to create a sudo pw for the user with passwd. Or do the mesa drivers need to be compiled from source? Since its a custom APU I think this would probably be the case.

As for updating the drivers,I tried to do it via pacman but all I got after a reboot was a black screen and I had to reset steamOS so.... I wouldn't recommend it.
Maybe from source would be a better option,if we could get the source for the correct version,made for the deck
