Gemini - a ship with identity crisis
« on: January 17, 2022, 06:17:23 AM »

Is Gemini truly a Combat Freighter? Stats (especially crew requirement) and supply/month indicate it is, but then it has Civ-grade Hull, which none of the other Combat Freighters do (Hound, Cerberus, Wayfarer, Mule).

It was changed in 0.95a - given extra 1000 hull points, BUT also civ-grade hull! I felt like this is a debuff - it gets heavily penalized by the Militarized Subsystems. It is also too expensive for it's logistic profile (due to combat oriented stats).

Code
# Old Gemini
Gemini,gemini,Freighter,Midline,reservewing,9,3500,250,2700,2833,170,55,1,50,35,15,25,20,400,OMNI,,150,0.4,0.8,,,55,120,250,70,2,35,9,36000,4,8,360,0.25,9,9,CARRIER,midline_bp,,0.6,2,3,305
# New Gemini
Gemini,gemini,Combat Freighter,Midline,reservewing,9,4500,250,2700,2833,170,75,1,50,35,15,25,20,400,OMNI,,150,0.4,0.8,,,55,120,250,70,2,35,9,36000,4,8,360,0.25,9,9,28,125,,,,,,midline_bp,,0.6,2,3,,305

Should it drop "Combat" and become a truly civilian ship? Or just drop civ-grade hull mod and be a true Combat Freighter?

I'm surprised Gemini got civilian hull, there isn't really anything justifying this change.

The Gemini was intended to benefit from the assault/escort package hullmods, and their associated skill that was added in 0.95. Unfortunately both were removed in 0.95.1, so civilian hull isn't the stealth buff (or potential buff) that it once was

I have made a bug report. If the reason for it gaining civ-grade hullmods was to use packages which no longer exist, then the hullmod should be dropped.

That's an oversight, not a bug.

While I prefer the civilian hull removed, civilian does not count toward skills that count combat ship DP.

I am using Gemini often as an exploration fleet freighter (usually 6 of them) and I actually prefer it to have civilian hull :)

Reason is the Bulk Transport perk that I'm always picking - it gets 11 burn with civilian hull and the main downside is sensor visibility and the perks reserved for military ships.

DP might be a bit high - It may not be worth 9 DP and maintenance - 8 would be a better number.
I like using it as a Pilum + Thunder platform for support and the fact that transport slots in my explo fleet can still be used for support in combat.

It would be good if assault and escort packages could be back in some form, those were occasionally useful mods.

I have had an experience similar to MrTwister - I was using some during a playthrough where I had industry skills, and while my sensor profile was terrible my speed was amazing, and they are "ok" in combat (only 1 bay, but a much better weapons/flux/speed/shield than condors).

The only fast civilian freighter. Without current faster burn speed due to civilian hull mod+skill ship will be less useful and less distinct.
