I simply don't give my AI torpedoes.  The chance that a wacky situation can occur that gets one of my ships in the line of fire after the torp is fired is more than 0%, which is more than I can stomach.  If I'm giving my AI missiles of any kind, they're either infinite ones like the pilum or guided ones like the harpoon or atropos.  I will NEVER give my AI hammers or reapers.  I learned that lesson on day one.
