3D-Planet Trickery: Is it possible? *YES IT IS!!*
« on: April 17, 2012, 06:33:38 PM »

Got another weird idea.

You know those weird pictures that seem to move as you change your viewing angle of them?

What if we tried that with planets? Those things spin so the angle changes even if you sit still behind your screen.

If only I knew the name for those things, I can't find anything online. Does anyone know what I'm thinking of?

I'll bet it's way beyond my meager skills though, plus I can't find anything on it. Makes me second guess my memory.

Sounds like your refering to Lenticular printing

The only other thing i can think of is voxel technology (its a 3D screen without the glasses)

I remember where I got the idea from, it was the Mona Lisa Trick.

It's a special way of using color or brush strokes or something. I hope it's possible to replicate on a computer screen. I though I had seen it somewhere but where?

Nice try medikohl, but no, plus it would not work in Starfarer due to that being a gif file. (or better said a moving picture)

EDIT: Wait a sec... It's not a moving picture!! This is probably what I meant.

wouldnt work anyway cause the image would need to be like that to create the illusion of movement.

WOW, it actually works! Seriously in-game it works.

It's really hard to notice but it does still work, even when I had to cut the original picture in half and scale it up somewhat but it still has the effect.

Imagine what could be done if you designed a picture like this to work on a round object?!

Thank you so much medikohl, please tell me where you got this from?

(I'm really being serious here, please don't mind the tip text in the picture.)

If you don't believe me, here is the picture I used. Try it yourself.

You may want to edit your planet file to make every type of planet use this picture otherwise your in for a long wait before it shows up.

For some reason this thread makes me feel like I've bin trolled, I've bin trolled, I've probably bin told.  I should not reply to you because you're just getting a rise.  Out of me, yes it's probably true, when I respond that's your que.  When you start troubble on the double you stroke your stubble.  I've bin trolled, I've bin trolled, and that I should probably just fold.  My only winning move is to not play.  Yet, I want to keep on trying, and mindlessly replying, I've bin trolled!  I hope I have a nice day?
