After about 100h campaign I learned that my captain with an obscured face is actually a girl when one of the pathers referred to my edgy named space pirate as "sister". Bummer!

You don't, it's just built into some of the portraits. You can make a guess at the gender based on the randomly generated name though. Or just pretend the pather was guessing.

There is one character (old person with cyber eye) that this happened to me as well. I didn't really care as.... its not real.

That's the thing. I was fairly certain that generated "Cain" is a male name.

For the vanilla portaits, all portraits in the same row are the same sex, and it alternates between each row. So if your masked portrait is on the same row as unmasked ladies, you're a lady, too.

There have already been a few posts about this, Alex responded and is aware.  Whether he changes character selection and how remains to be seen.  But it is kinda weird to find out that your helmeted dude looks like a lady...
