Alex, do gates mean bigger default sector sizes?

Are you going to increase the default sector sizes when gates are implemented?

I don't think Alex ever said that the gates are going to be implemented. Game lore is that the gates died; their death was the cause of the state of the galaxy. It would be entirely against the grain for the gates to be revived.

I think the Gate System, as a whole, will likely stay closed for Starsector but I wouldn't be surprised if a few gates become operational due to story missions.

You have to remember, the Gates allow all manners of "bottle missions" that can whisk the player to ridiculous areas that don't have to have any continuity with main game. Want to send the player to an alien hive world? Gate. Want to send the player to system about to supernova (i.e. timed mission)? Gate. Want an otherwise impossible army to storm a system? Gate.

It's a great tool for an ever-expanding narrative. Gates being the only way in/out means everything is contained therein. As long as the majority of the game isn't traveling between a system of Gates toward a McGuffin (i.e. Homeworld), we'll still have our sandbox.

It's obvious from the recent Twitter teasers that the gates are going to become active. Now, I doubt you'll be the ones traveling through them, rather enemies will come OUT of them and that'll be the end game.

I highly doubt the recent Twitter teasers have anything to do with the gates.

The true and accurate history of the Sector blog post shows gates operating like 2d portals. The teased stuff looks more like anomalies or small-scale hyperspace terrain.
