You must spend alot of time farming pirates :D. TBH I fly around trying to capture tech from the more advanced factions and the game lasts alot longer. Still 4 hours getting a fleet to maxed size is impressive. Grats on your manly man ness.

I actually stop farming pirates within half an hour-ish. I usually move on to the Tri supply fleets for a few high tech ships, then after I get about 3-4 of the ones I want i'll go after everything and anything I can to get the $$ for loads of fighters, then get an Astral and go after all the biggest fleets. It sounds crazy but if you attack those massive Hem Guard fleets with like 3-6 Capitals and like 8-20 other assorted ships they can be realllly easy to wipe out entirely. Just cap all the points with your fighters, send in wave after wave of bombers to kill the cruisers and destroyers, then when all they have are massive lumbering capitals just steam roll them one by one with 1000's of bombs :D You either make toooons of $$ from the kills or sell the survivors for even more some times.
My final fleet was:
2 Paragons
1 Astral
8 Broadswords
10 Piranhas
2 Daggers
and my flagship 1 heavily modified Aurora
( I have used just my Aurora to kill 3 Full HP Onslaughts at the same time )

The reason you make so much money is that this system is very large and extremely highly-trafficked.  It's a gold mine.  If the player can get so much money from such a system, there should be independent admirals who are going around with death fleets.  I'd personally love to see independent hunter-killer fleets that are fairly fast and utterly unstoppable, pillaging stuff before you can get to it in systems like these so it makes it harder to become stupidly rich and overpowered.

How is the price set for ships anyway? I designed a capital which has awesome everything and I expect it to cost around half a million ingame, only to find it cost 130000?

Most Cap Ships cost 150,000. Large slot weaponry costs between 26,000 and 4,000 each.

My guess is that currency will have more utilities other than merely purchasing ships, once more features are added into the game.

Used to purchase stations, or create factories on planets, or affect planets or factions in some manner. I'm guessing you will be able to split ships into AI controlled squads that would defend your assets, so there is another place you will invest money.

Then again the financial systems in the game at present are probably not fully balanced.

But who knows whats going to come about.

My personal hopes for the for the economy is that it will be empire based, and that you actully can own a system, that would be awesome. And then you can buy autofactories and make blueprints of the existing ships. And you can create fleets that way.

ability to research new technology for insane amount of money and get something none have - more powerfull hull, more powerfull weapon or something similar.

Hull mods, other type of shields or engine, weapon that able to kill crew without much damage to hull.

Currently only advantage of player is human brain, this is not good for RPG and allow player to win only by swarming enemy.

Investing 1KK into experemental type of weapon and get cannon that bypass shields.
Invest 1kk into experemntal engine and get nontackable ship completely invulnerable to aimed missiles.

such options will allow player to choose playstile, small amount of bleeding edge technology ships or armada of midline-lowtech ones.

currenly only viable option medusa + fightest then capital ship + escort and mass ships wipe everything.
