Isn't it time for pirates to take a hit?
« on: September 22, 2019, 12:12:02 PM »

Pirates never go away. Like a recidivist cancer, they always come back.

But I think that pirate bases in buttfuck nowhere shouldn't have such strong fleets.
How do they survive? Raids? Raiding fleets never go back.

It's time to tone down their cheats so that it makes sense how they can maintain such big fleets without literally having any food, let alone supplies.

I guess that'll be next version or so, which could be a long time!  ;D

But yeah the pirates and luddic path are both doing what the other should be, more or less.

Yep, it's impossible to inflict any notable damage on either. The only reward you get for destroying a raiding pirate base is another one popping up on opposite side of map (but still raiding you from there).

(Raiding fleets do go back! If they survive. In any case, yeah, toning this down is on the TODO list, though not for any sort of "realism" related reason. Right now, there's not much endgame stuff, and pirates - along with punitive expeditions - end up playing too large a role just to fill in the gap.)

I'd rather see carriers actually be given an AI that isn't so impossibly convinced it's a battleship that absolutely MUST be at knife-fighting range of the entire enemy fleet.

I just want them to not be able to simply throw *** at us without ever getting affected by it, especially given how often they do so and how often we destroy their bases.

I understand the normal factions being able to send strong stuff occasionally, since they control the strongest worlds/stations, but even they do so occasionally compared to the continuous endless onslaught of the pirates and pathers.

Their behaviour is based on their armament: if they only have missiles and PD, they will hide behind other ships.
So...only the Legion really has to fight up front.
Remember to give it a heavy armour mod.

That or give them a long range beam on the front so they will at least stay at 1000 metres.

I like to see pirates disappear for awhile after a base gets destroyed, especially after I wiped out core.  Killing all of core is no fun when I get pirate activity back immediately after destroying the base that caused it.  Also, less aggressive pirates means more time to do fun stuff instead of being forced to play space cop to defend colonies, whether mine or the backstabbing major factions.

Pirates should actually accept bribes. They are pirates. That is how they operate in RL.
If you drop your cargo (assuming you have valuable cargo) they should let you go. They shouldn't be looking for pointless fights and taking unnecessary risks. then again it should depend on the pirates.
Some might be satisfied with only a part of your cargo. Others might only be interested in credits. Others again might want ALL of your cargo. And some might just be sadists and want to kill you anyway.

Pirates behave more like zombies or ghouls.  If they stay as they are, they probably should have a name change and their monologues changed to hulk speak like "ARRR!  BRAINS!  OUT THE AIRLOCK!"

Someone said it before (although I forget who) that, in vanilla, pirates make better factions than the factions, and pathers make better pirates than the pirates.

Vayras sector allows for pirate permadeath if you destroy all the pirates worlds

Total horse *** fed through a straw. I've had carriers with only PD and they still rush in to knife-fight Onslaughts by themselves.
