this is my biggest pet peeve as of now as it makes tarsus a otherwise good and speedy cargo hauler a poor choice since it doesn't use it when there's ships nearby. i understand that on some circumstances it could be risky to burn drive straight forward as you could burn drive into enemy ships but that should really be up to the player to decide if it ought to burn drive straight ahead (direct retreat) or be cautious (normal retreat).

there's also the thing that the reason direct order became a thing was iirc precisely because of ships that have forward movement abilities
so if those ships won't use those abilities properly when given the direct order then direct order is essentially useless imo

Made a note to check this out! I mean, they're more likely to use burn drive using direct retreat just because they'll likely be facing in the right direction, but perhaps they could be more aggressive about it.

I have the same issue.

I lost a Onslaught TWICE in my game because this is what happens:

1) My Onslaught gets low in combat (armor and hull damage) due to being the frontliner tank (this is how I specialize my ships).

2) I tell it to RETREAT.

3) It starts to slowly back up.

The problem happens here:

4) The Onslaught BURN DRIVES TOWARDS THE ENEMIES WHILE RETREATING.

5) It now dies because its taking even more fire that it shouldn't be if it was properly retreating.

This is (sometimes) fixed by ordering a Direct Retreat (instead of a normal retreat) but even then, they sometimes *** up and burn drive towards their enemies instead of turning around and burn driving away.

Not sure what in the code is making them do this? Maybe enemy ships move out of weapon range so the Onslaught decides its a good idea to burn drive in instead of disengage, leading to their deaths?

Note this happens with aggressive AND steady AI captains.

Just to confirm, you're on version 0.9.1a, yes? Offhand that shouldn't be possible but maybe I need to take another look at that code.

I am on 0.9.1a and with a few mods, but I don't think the mods are causing it, since im using a Vanilla Onslaught setup.

Thank you for confirming! It's probably not mods, yeah (unless you're using a ship AI mod), though technically it's possible.

I play without mods, and see Legion and Dominator burn toward the enemy occasionally even after a Full Retreat was given.

Similarly, ships with burn drives on escort duty (in 0.8, at least) will burn away from the ship they are supposed to be escorting.

Can confirm. Its even happen when you give the whole fleets all retreat order when you try run away .
