once I got a colony up and running how do I build a ship for my fleet?

you give your colony heavy industries for it to build the ship, which will have a lot of D-mods if you do not give a Pristine Nanoforge to it.

press D then 5 (or 4 cant remember) choose the model and wait until end of month

i think it's doesn't matter you will always receive it by the end of the month when they pay you and all. You can literally ask for it 3 days before the month end.
