wreck hull strength

just wondering, how is this calculated?
Since I just had two battles where 6 wings of piranhas basted an astral into spacedust. (ie, after the big boom, there was nothing left) - conversely, you have to actually try to take out the wreck of an Onslaught (or have bad enough aim you waste practically all your torpedoes firing them right into the wreck))
