Strange AI behavior - lowering shields
« on: February 27, 2012, 03:32:45 PM »

You'll see at every end of my shoot enemy ai lower shield and ship is damaged. His flux is at minimum and he got plenty of it so why did he lower shields and let beam hit him? I captured end of battle but he started to acting like this in middle of map. I think he started with that behavior when he decide to run of the map. Here is video:

It's partly because you might be waay out of "usual" weapon range, enemies lower shields when you are out of "expectet" range
also the lowering too early is new to me... might be an actual bug

This is a bug - the ship is a bit too optimistic about assuming the Tachyon Lance is on cooldown. Fixed in next version.

Speaking of which, I've noticed that the AI does not seem to be aware of the damage caused by explosions. They sensibly lower their shields when firing on an overloaded ship, then eat the explosion damage. Often causes the majority of my combat losses...

I'm with you Thaago, the only non-strike craft losses I've suffered were when my ships got too close to a cruiser to finish it off, then dropped shields when it stopped firing

Alex spoke about this here http://fractalsoftworks.com/forum/index.php?topic=1117.msg12694#msg12694
and
Just wanted to let you guys know that I'm working on this for the next release. At this point, frigates hardly ever get killed by other ship's explosions, are more careful about colliding with something they're attacking, and I'm tweaking the AI to be more cautious when dealing with overwhelming firepower.

Thank you all for your feedback - it really helps to see specific examples!

The issue I think is occurring is that the lance fores for about a second for 1500 damage, whereas the AI believes it's a single projectile rather than a beam.
