New player. Best target for flagship?
« on: February 26, 2012, 03:37:44 PM »

I figure the title to be self explanatory lol, but would a carrier be a good idea to strive for to be my flagship or are they just support and i should get the biggest, meanest armed ship i can afford?
I should explain, im still waiting for my key so i have no idea what ships are what, so please be gentle.

The Lasher class frigate is quite a powerful ship and makes a good yet affordable personal vessel. Your question is sort of multi faceted, if you want to be able to run fighters and bombers though I'd say you should skip the condor and try and get a Venture. Ventures are durable enough to survive most fights under AI control while still giving you the mid-battle re-arm and repair of the condor.

for me i always use the Medsua class destroyer ( it looks like a big blue circle of flying death) it has pretty good customizing and for its size its rather quick. but off the bat its rather expensive so a a wolf frigate is also very good, it might be too fast and squirrely for you at first i know it was for me. so you'll have to experiment a bit whats right for you, but try not to take a condor as your flagship that's asking for trouble. and remember F5 and F9 are your friends ( quick save and quick load)

also welcome to the forums friend!

Yeah, I second the Medusa recommendation. The only disadvantage of it is that in the heat of battle it's often easy to lose track of which way you're facing due to the vessel's circular shape. Though you're going to have to work a bit before you can afford that. Bigger ships are obviously more powerful, but also much more boring to fly.

i say it comes down to your play style. we all have different styles so your going to have most people tell you what they use because they find what they use the most fun..

personally i use an Odyssey as my flag ship. that being said i am not one for right in the middle of it combat. i like to think of myself as the Admiral of the fleet and as such to valuable to be right in the thick of it most of the time and relegate my ship to a support role for combat vs larger ships.

if you want speed and to be in the thick of it. you will probably want a destroyer or a frigate. if you want really good stopping power but not be in the back lines either then i would say go for a nice cruiser if you want lots and lots of fighters and few other ships probably one of the 2 flight deck capable capital ships. if you want lots of big guns with lots of hitting power then one of the 2 battleships.

also you may want to check out some of the mods.. though i would wait till you get a feel for the game first before you do that as the standard alpha build here has a bit of a learning curve already.

You won't be able to refit fighters and bombers at all. They're designed/balanced around having a particular set of weapons and would be very broken if you could change it. Which ones you pick for your fleet -out of quite a few that are available- is the choice here, not how they're outfitted.

Boring right up until you just BARELY squeeze past that torp shot. Any ship can be exciting to fly. Although the nature of the excitement changes between classes.

thats why i fly a medusa its relatively fast and you can actually participate in a battle instead of crawling up the battlefield. i mean capital ships are all well and good but a tad pathetic for speed.

I am also a capital ship flyer. Fast ships are all well and good, but you don't get that visceral rush of watching your heavy batteries thunder to life and your opponents' armor glow incandescent as your weapons fire vaporizes it. Also, AI capital ships often maneuver poorly, and by that I don't mean that they fly around aimlessly, I mean they fail to optimize their positioning at high value targets.

But I also agree that it is a matter of taste. As many here have aptly pointed out, if you play a more dynamic ship as your flagship, it's often easy to lose track of the big picture. Capital ships are powerful enough that you can be secure in them while eyeing what's going on in the battle at large, but it is also true that they tend not to be as exciting to fly overall.

The idea is that the various tech levels represent different - not "better" - ways to do things.

I often play PD ships, only equiped with PD weapons...
the AI currently does very poorly at intercepting huge swarms of missiles (or tanking them with shields if possible/necessary)
or intercepting fighters and keeping them from returning to the carrier.
(thus i have to say that the ai is good and stuff like that would just be too much to ask)

I tend to personally prefer flying around in a Hyperion - Its got the speed and maneuverability to avoid most stuff, with the firepower to engage most stuff if it can find a favorable angle (which it usually can)

I just wish I could use an allied flight deck to resupply torpedoes..

That's why you fly the Paragon equipped with 4 Tachyon Lance, and one shot frigates across the map ;D

It really depends on your playing style; a fast ship where you can be part of the battle or slow-ass capital ship where you have to slowly travel to the fights or stay back and snipe other ships with long range beams. Personally, I tend to use the reasonably fast Medusa for active engagement, and only switch to the boring slow capital ships with tachyon lances (superb sniping range) when the Medusa is under repair.
