I think the order of unlocks for Applied Physics skill is a bit off.

From a metagame perspective, Frontal Shield Generator (level 10 unlock) is really only useful for the early game (Hound and Buffalo Mk 2), whereas Hardened Shields (level 3 unlock) is a key component of tons of end-game builds. Having FSG be the level 10 unlock means you probably won't unlock it until long after it loses its usefulness.

From a lore perspective, I can see how adding shields to a ship that doesn't support it would be more complicated than getting better performance from an existing system, but an alternative view would be that the FSG is a cobbled-together hack job, whereas Hardened Shields represents a master of the field tweaking a system few really understand anymore - and doing a better job than the ancient ship designers!

Swapping them would also mean people would put more than 3 (or 7 if you really want Advanced Optics) points into the skill. ;)

You make some very good points, done :)

Edit: ... not to say that it won't get shifted around some more, later. But for now, the gameplay implications seem more important, anyway.
