New campaign, same character
« on: August 31, 2014, 05:42:25 PM »

Hello all!
I was wondering if it were possible to port over an older character into a fresh campaign. The reason being that I would rather not keep making a new character and starting from scratch every time I come across a new mod to add. If this is at all possible, how might I go around to doing it?

For mods like console commands and shaderlib you won't need a new save, but for most mods that add content you'll need a new save to interact with the content in the campaign.

I figured as much, essentially anything that gets added to the map I'd need a new campaign. But does anyone know if I'd somehow still use the same character, just without the hassle of going through the progress made again?

Here is a manual method.

Select the same portrait in the new game menu.

Enable dev mode in starsector-core\data\config\settings.json.

   "devMode":true,

Then press K for 25,000 credits each press, and L for 50,000XP. Until you have the money and XP level you had previously.

If you want to give yourself back the same ships you had before use LazyWizard's console commands. With that tool you can give yourself back the ships and weapons you had previously.

After you're done getting your character back to the previous level. You can disable dev mode and disable the console. You shouldn't need to use this method too often, but I understand the frustration of getting to level 40-50+ then having to start all over again for some mods and what not.

Hello Debido! Thank you very much for your reply. I did similarly to what you suggest, but instead of using the Dev mode, I simply got the console commands and set how much experience I had and gave myself the same ships with a decent amount of money to get back crew and weapons as I didn't pay enough attention to note I could add crew and weapons. Doh! Anyways, thank you for the response.

Well I sometimes also suggest devmode just for the extra camera zoom out distance. In vanilla your zoom out distance is constrained by the size of your ship. In dev mode you can zoom out considerably regardless of the ship you are piloting, this is quite the utility for spatial and combat awareness for larger fleet battles.

Oh really? Well then, once I get lots of ships, I'll be sure to give it a try! Thank you for the hint!

And if you keep the console enabled, you can turn dev mode on and off in game
