Retreat

I have not tried this yet and so I do not know, but does giving a retreat order cost command points?

That would seem kind of messed up, if you were toward the end of battle and needed to send a unit close to destruction to retreat, but cannot because you don't have command points...

Personally I think retreat should always be free. Retreat has always been an option in every battle ever known to man.

yeah... funny how I just lost a vigilance from lack of retreating option right before posting (she got repaired though so it's not that bad)

I don't agree with it either, but that's just the way it is right now

Alex has said that he didn't like the micro that it encouraged. At least that is what I think he said.  :)

I understand that there are many strategies one could implement in case of a failed assault or an unseen attack, but the truth is most people don't prepare to fail. Chances are, if your in a fleet battle, you've been skirting around the pirate base waiting to pick up a smaller fish and you intend on winning. At that point you have spent your command points (which are not many in the beginning of the game) on sending out teams to capture enough buoy to get the rest of your fleet out. Here some would then argue that when you capture a buoy you are rewarded command points, but correct me if im wrong, you must then use that command point to send the same unit used to earn it to get on with another task, otherwise that ship will just sit at the buoy eating the last bag of Doritos while your carrier is getting shredded and now you have no command points to do anything about it. The only remaining option being to pilot the damaged ship, space gods forbid you are across the map and have to wait a few minutes before you reach the flux maxed vessel that apparently has no clue its dying. All I'm saying is that retreat should always be a free option. Perhaps I should post a poll for it on the suggestions?

There are many quotes that fit this, but lets go with this one:
“Expect the best, plan for the worst, and prepare to be surprised.”
- Denis Waitley

A good tactician always has either an ace up his sleeve, or an escape route. You make a mistake and the game punishes you. That's how it's supposed to be.

The limit on command points is intended, and it is set low to prevent micromanagement.
Most engagements feature 4 structures, 2 on each side. You set the one closest to you on "Capture", the second one on "Assault" and use the last point to give your carrier an escort. By the time the enemy reaches you, you have at least 2 command points back (from the 2 structures) and can give more orders if needed. And if you stick to your fleet you can even see what's happening.

If you use the "Capture" command then the ships will only stick around the point if an enemy is going to it as well. If you don't want it to protect the point, you can cancel the capture command (at 0 cost), but then you will probably lose it to an enemy.

My 2 cents: if you want a few extra command points, take a few leadership ranks :)

Thanks Thaago, I have been looking into the skill tree trying to even things out a little.

As for the Capture move, I guess I never noticed it was there, I just selected the units I wanted to go for it and right clicked on the point, which now seems stupid of me. Thank you for the enlightenment.
