General Discussion / Re: eagle and falcon class cruisers

Depends on what you are looking for tactically. Ivaylo does an excellent job of describing the purposes and general upsides of the ships with his writing, and I personally think that the middle-level tech ships are some of the most balanced and versatile ships in the game. However, I recently decided to go all Tachyon because of the low availability of middle-tech ships such as the Sunder-class and Hammerhead-class. Tactically, the Hammerhead is my favorite ship in the entire game because of how spectacularly quick it is for its size, power, and just general awesomeness.

General Discussion / How long is one day?

I want to know primarily so I can see (in seconds and minutes) how much of my life I have poured into this game. Since buying it about a month back, I recently started a file and, by my estimates, have poured upwards of 20-30 hours into the campaign mode.

The Apogee is easily my favorite, being so well-rounded. I just wish I had more the option of more weapon configurations, to be able to separately control each of those weird asymmetric weapons. It bothers the living crap out of me that I cannot easily swap between the Pilum and the Harpoon missiles. More weapon keys to be added in the next update, maybe?

What does it do? I am asking this primarily because I am considering outfitting my recently acquired Astral class with it, and I want to be able to extend the range of my Heavy Blasters as well. Will the Optics add the range to my Blasters as well?

Veeeerrrry close win of the Broadsword over the Xyphos. The Xyphos are just a little bit slower, but their amazing lasers just cannot make up for the very small lack of speed.

General Discussion / Re: Good Hammerhead Variants?
« on: February 21, 2012, 04:11:38 PM »
I loved the Hammerhead as my flagship for a long time, but there just aren't enough of the ships to go around. 2x Heavy Maulers, 2x anti-armor missile of choice, and then 4x point defense of choice. That layout has enough to annoy frigate shields (PD lasers), enough to knock out frigates/other destroyers (anti-armor missile of choice), and the Heavy Maulers work wonders against destroyers and up to Venture-class ships. I think I took out some other kinds of cruisers as well, although I think I had some support in the form of a Lasher or other assault frigate.

Because of this thread, I am going to stop using LR PD. Also, I crunched some numbers and thought about it, and the extra range isn't worth much if you have to turn faster to hit those fast ships at longer range. So, to PD and Tac lasers it is. As for larger point-defense weapons, I would probably go with the Vulcan cannon or Heavy Needler. They can cover your ass in an instant with the amount of projectiles they spew.

Tossup between the Hound and the Omen. I have personally used neither, but their performance against me is awful. But against an earlier post, I LOVE the Brawler. I have only ever had one, but I loved it while I had it. I think it is just fine for taking on capital ships in a frigate, and there is nothing like maulers and AM blasters to lay down the pain.

Since you all seem to be rather polarized on your opinion of factions, I think I might be a bit of an outlier. I am fond of the Wolf-class ships for their spectacular performance, despite their rarity, but I really hate the Tri-Tachyon faction because of the uneven ships. The Hegemony is pretty awesome because of the already-mentioned manly awesomeness. So, in the end I am really just fond of the Mercenary group, because they use both kinds of ships, along with some of the rarer middle-level tech ships.

Welp, I am currently camping out on my fourth planet, just trying to get as many TT ships as possible. Can't wait for more wolves, and as soon as I manage to complete my full TT fleet, I will sell off all of my Hegemony/Pirate equipment in order to (hopefully) get a powerful TT fleet that has fewer than 200 fleet points.

Arright, so here's me on my 6-month-old Alienware M14X (don't hate, it was good for the price), running an i5 at 2.3 Ghz, a GT555M with 3GB texture memory and shader version something-or-other-point-zero, 6GB of ram at 667 hz, so everything is running pretty damn well. I have it open right now, and I am showing 40-60 FPS on a pause over Corvus IV with no other ships around (mind you, this is with my moderately massive fleet of ~250 points), and when unpaused... 40-60 FPS. Looks like I am good to go for future versions. Oh, almost forgot, idle shifts from 50% to 80% rather randomly, even as I type this. Screen size is 1600x900, which I now regret because I can't play BF3 without a framerate of ~5. the best thing about being a computer player is rofling at my bro who plays console with his sheet graphics on Xbox 360.

Apogee, all the way. I know they are uneven, and normally I hate uneven ships with a vengeance, but I recently warmed up to anything with the word exploration in it, and I named the one that I bought the "Magellan", a name I deemed suitable for the class. If I even get any more, I will have the Columbus, followed by Lewis and Clark, my two exploration frigates/destroyers. :D

For a while I had not attacked the Tri-Tachyon, assuming it would come in handy later.
Recently, I decided, *** it! I want some Paragons! Unfortunately, I don't have any yet, but camping Corvus IV should do the trick. :D

I find it funny that you think 30k CR is a lot. As of right now, I have almost 1 million. :D

One key can be used for as many computers as you have, so go ahead!
I just tested it by downloading the Linux version on my Windows laptop, which is pointless but proves that I can download any version!
