Is posting doodles allowed? I actually got inspired how mastery exploration and escort cruisers could look like. And me getting inspired AND actually doing something is quite rare occurrence!

General Discussion / Re: Terminator Drones and Phase cloak - OP?
« on: June 02, 2017, 04:52:09 AM »
I've tested 1 on 1 against tempest with the only aim being destruction of the drone...

Wolf most probably can't and if it wants to, needs to sacrifice its PD for IR lasers.
Lasher has some problems, but with proper application of AAF defeats drone quickly. Doesn't require specialist loadout.
Scarab will not defeat it with PD only, but if it has IR lasers (at least 1) or AM blasters, it can defeat it sometimes, though chances raise to very high when using temporal shell.
Centurion has some trouble keeping up with the drone, but Centurion keeping shields with it kills it quickly with LAGs and autocannons.
Omen straight up annihilates the drone with arc emitter, it doesn't need anything else.
Wayfarer has weapons to do the job, but not the flux.
I haven't tested Brawler, Cerberus, Hermes, Hound, Kite, Mercury, Mudskipper, Shepherd and Vigilance because I expect them to fail.
I haven't tested Hyperion and phase frigates either because I suspect they'll either render the drone non-issue or just straight-up kill it.
As for destroyers, I suspect Enforcer with RFC defeats it, Hammerhead most of the time fails, Medusa with IRs or Pulse Lasers wins, Sunder fails, as well as probably rest of them.
Maaaybe it is a little too powerful...

Ship/Weapon Pack and Underworld took ships and Dynasector took most of the mechanics.

@Aeson I've meant that either low-tech destroyers are ignored (since other tech levels have 2) or that high-tech is favoured (since it has up to 3).

Venture isn't combat cruiser. I've always thought of it being some weird civilian combat freighter. Eagle and Falcon are 1. mid-tech, 2. use energy PD (which is typically worse than ballistic).

Almost like it's a real battlecruiser, able to kill what it can't outrun and outrun what it can't kill.
But that's on top of having 2000 units wide bubble that nothing smaller than cruiser can enter...

But it will have 2 wings. 2k range beams with fighters adding hard flux damage and it itself being highly mobile would equal Odyssey having huge area of "denial" by firepower. With its many mounts it wouldn't have to have interceptors to defend itself against other fighters and with triple tachyon beams and HEF it'd have 11250 burst damage... It can pierce through many shields with no to little support and everything that can withstand this, the Odyssey will be able to kite.

1800 range beams on a mobile platform is entering "Paragon with plasma jets" territory... As in, overpowered.

Oh wow - I didn't think about them. In Onslaught's case it's not that big deal since it isn't exactly supposed to tank much with its shields, but Astral has flux-free weapons (fighters), so it can tank until the flux cap. New Odyssey really looks bleak in that comparison.

Perhaps we should have a look at other high-tech ships' shields... In the table "new" Odyssey with its 1,0 shields is basically a bigger Aurora in that regard, while old Odyssey was losing (albeit slightly) to an Apogee, which admittedly has a damn strong shield. Both of those, though, are nothing in comparison to Paragon's shields... I'll have to see if speed and second fighter wing make up for worse shields.

I didn't read Legion's description, but if I had to make it up I'd say that Legion is actually a ship made to use leftover ballistic weapons while providing fighter support. Other than that, there's Mora, which is a brick, but a bit weird when you think about epochs and the Condor, which is a conversion and thus doesn't quite follow any epoch's design guidelines.

I don't know who, but I'd join him. I like efficiency and in my fleet there's place only for dedicated ships. Dedicated freighters and dedicated combat ships (and tankers and rigs). I don't see a point in taking a ship with me if 2 dedicated ships will beat him in efficiency while being less than 2 times more expensive than it. I'd rather have a dedicated "cheap capital" than a hybrid mess. Multirole ships are for early game.

If we're talking about variety, then IMO we perhaps should think about adding 1-2 destroyers rather than cruisers, since there are only 5 combat destroyers and only 4 of them are common and depending on how we interpret Sunder's tech level, either there are 3 combat high-tech destroyers or only 1 low-tech destroyer.
Though, if when I think of it, within cruiser there is no not-forward firepower-focused. That may be an argument for making a cruiser.
Apogee, as far as I know, was always a hybrid ship, just it was too strong for its purpose before. Now it's better high-tech Venture.

Phase ships are a branch of Expansion ships that's focused on gimmicks than on reliability, they feel like another epoch due to the fact that Mastery and Core designs are linear (though, if we used tank history as a template, it really ought not to), while Expansion design branches. Lore aside, in-game they're pretty different from other ships in their function too, with strong armour and flux stats and good mobility, but having to rely on phasing and ship systems.

I think that maintenance reduction would be better for Odyssey than another combat buff.

You do know that "slap tons of armour on it" was the standard approach of Mastery Epoch's engineers? Look at the Onslaught and Enforcer, possibly also Venture. They all have exceptional armour for their weight and are old designs. There isn't non-heavy Mastery cruiser because Mastery doctrine doesn't have non-heavy cruiser.
That said, I can't help but notice that there actually isn't "defensive" 360 coverage cruiser at the moment.

AFAIK projectile weapons are safe, only beams sre affecyed by that. Phase lances for sure, I've already reported that.
