I'm Sorry if I'm a bit out here, but what exactly is grinding?
Doing random battles again and again for experience, or other things, to get somewhere. In final fantasy, you must grind in order to continue, you are not powerful enough by the time you get to a part.

Just re-sprite the ships, and as for sliding around, either think of it a drifting or a side effect of being in space.
