General Discussion / Re: this is the greatest game ever made
« on: February 16, 2021, 05:55:18 PM »
why does it need such a focus and such a story? do you really need every little bit of plot and detail spelled out to you in a 40 page handbook? cause that is the antithesis of good writing. as it is, you create your own characters. you don't necessarily need mods to create your own elaborate stories.

Disagree with this immensely. It's less about outright plot development(in this sort of game) and more about world building, a vehicle to cram in little nuances and quirks of the universe. Getting to know the opinions and personalities of characters that you come to learn why they are like this.

General Discussion / Re: Why does anyone like these ships?
« on: February 05, 2021, 04:23:43 PM »
I second Thaago here. My exploration fleets are a lot different from the fleets I run when I'm expecting absolute carnage. I might bring one capital but it has augmented drive field and EO. Handicapped, sure, but still a capital if things get messy.

That said, I don't understand using Moras to fill out an exploration fleet. Bring more dmod shepherds if you want a better fleet for scanning planets. Don't have to use augmented drive field either.

General Discussion / Why does anyone like these ships?
« on: January 30, 2021, 06:05:48 PM »
Its something that has come up in many threads and I still don't understand why people like certain ships that I wouldn't have in my fleets in my nightmares. From least to most understandable:

-The Mora

It screams of a ship that is trying to do too many different things at once with it's relatively low OP limit. 2x medium missile slots that would be foolish to not make use of, 8x small ballistic slots that could be used for railguns or point defense, with a whopping 3 flight decks; and the missiles and fighters both being prime candidates for help with hullmods like missile racks or expanded deck crew. All of that OP cost leaves you far from a complete package no matter what strength of the ship you want to prioritize. If you put a focus on missiles, ballistics, or fighters, it severely hampers the utilization of both of the others.

What is the role this ship is supposed to play? It is a carrier, but it does not play to the strengths of any typical carrier, like the Heron. The Heron has limited emplacements which are in practice only good for PD as expected of a dedicated carrier, it doesn't want for them either when considering its role. In return it is allowed to specialize in what it's class of ship is expected to and most of them are: a fighter/bomber carrier. It is also much faster, with almost double the speed of the Mora allowing it to evade threats while projecting force where it wants much better than the Mora due to the Heron's ship system and emphasis on its fighters and bombers.

The only thing I can think of as a strength of the Mora is its durability. It can soak damage on the frontline better than any other carrier and be stuck in with any heavyweight cruisers and capitals one is fielding and hold its own. However....

There is a ship that already exists that actually can achieve what the Mora wants to do - the Legion. Sure, its in a higher weight class but compared to what a Legion can do, pound for pound, it falls flat. The Legion pulls its weight whereas the Mora does not. A legion can put out respectable firepower while also still being a useful carrier with the OP to spare, also while still being a capable frontliner like the Mora. Especially the XIV legion which is everything the original is but also a powerful missile boat.

-The Lasher

A frigate with 5x light ballistic slots and AAF. A little feisty bulldog worth of trouble. I'm not going to even attempt to compare it to the Tempest, that's just unfair. Compare it to the Brawler.

The Brawler has no AAF and is 20 units slower than the lasher. In exchange, has across the board better flux stats, durability, and has medium mounts for weapons that can punch much harder against targets the light weapons on a Lasher couldn't scratch.

The only use case of the Lasher that I could see as being superior to the Brawler is when you are chasing a retreating fleet and need mobile, high dps but low damage ships that can chew through retreating cargo and fuel ships quickly.

-The Shrike

It's not as outlandish as the first two compared to similar choices, because it does fit a general all-rounder profile. However, anything it can do is overshadowed by 3 notable ships in its weight class. The Hammerhead, Sunder, and Enforcer. The Hammerhead is very versatile and can dish out damage much better than a Shrike, while being slightly less survivable in terms of speed and shield stats. The Sunder is a similar case, with emphasis on energy instead of ballistic weapons.

The Enforcer fills a different niche than the Shrike, but does do it's job of heavy firepower and respectable durability much better than the Shrike can hope to do. It is very slow and has poor flux stats compared to the Shrike, but can really put the pain downrange when it is in range and has decent hull and armor to back it up(also pretty cheap).

I'm just amazed someone decided comparing Starsector to Oblivion made a good comparison, even on a single facet.

Alex I appreciate how, in spite of negative comments towards you as a developer, you are trying your best to keep the forum positive and discussion on track!

This is pretty much why I stick around and put effort towards modding and the modding community. I've tried to have honest discussions on other game forums in the past and at this point I don't even bother anymore.

They almost always devolve into tantrums and insults within the first couple of posts. Alex takes time out of his day despite being the sole dev to do this, and that's a feat of strength that few can equal imo.

Try going on the SC2 forums and talking about faction balance. Or heaven forbid you speak of class balance on the World of Warcraft forums. You will be devoured whole. :P A truly soul-sucking experience that you can see affect long-term moderators who eventually just stop posting altogether.

Alex is practically a saint in my book. Especially with all the whining I personally do in an effort to help make the game better. Heh.

Ban alex from looking at the forums so he can work on the game more  :P

///IRRELEVANT TANGENT///

On a serious note, I worked on a private server for a game that got shutdown awhile ago(the original game) as a dev for about 6 months. It was volunteer work, lots of fun though. As someone who played the game a lot(it was a pvp centric game) I had some very strong opinions on balance. I played almost every class and would try to listen to every criticism. Even though I did, I could easily separate who were the sweaty nerds trying to min/max from the casuals.

Before I was even on the project I had many arguments over balance around the game. The dichotomy of what makes the casual player enjoy things versus what the hardcore nerd that plays enjoys is something to consider. Trying to pander to both is a fine line that realistically is hard to achieve. Moreso with multiplayer games but I digress.

You can't please everyone. You either find a niche that people enjoy or you pander to everyone and please no-one.

///IRRELEVANT TANGENT OVER///

Alex has done a damn fine job setting out to what he wants his product to be. No clown fiesta of an AAA game dev studio. Just one dude and his passion project. That is respectable. If OP followed the blogposts semi-regularly it would be pretty clear this game is the furthest from being abandoned.

Alex just isn't being pressured by higher ups or shareholders into releasing SOMETHING RIGHT NOW no matter how unfinished it is coughcyberpunkcoughcough

Oof. I like the game too but in some places it just falls so short.

General Discussion / Re: Ship tier list
« on: January 03, 2021, 12:58:15 PM »
Conquest in S tier? My man I do enjoy piloting a conquest in an unoptimized double broadside build but it is nowhere close. B tier would be pushing it.

Also doom not being S tier is just wrong.

Stronger at doing what, exactly? And at what point of the game? AI controlled or in player's hands?

Nothing beats Salvage Rig if your aim is self-sustaining fleet, same goes for Shepherd and early game exploration/looting. Gryphon/Pirate Falcon/Doom/etc is a mean beast, capable of deleting entire fleets in human hands, while being pretty meh support vessel under AIs. Dominator is a powerhouse that will plow through early game fleets without any effort, but at later stages it turns into punching bag with zero chances of survival. And so on, and so forth...

Falcon(p) is more than cabable in AI hands. I did a pirate playthrough once and had 5-6 aggressive officers all in those and they caused carnage. Sabots, reapers, and IR pulse lasers because why not.

I've never understood why people like this ship. At all. Trash. Give me a wolf instead.

It's like a "win harder" ship. It doesn't contribute to a victory on it's own, but if you're chasing down a retreating fleet yeah then AAF on a frigate is good. Otherwise...

Iirc the cargo in shielded holds has priority given to it for illegal goods. As in if you're carrying 3k worth of goods with 300 shielded cargo capacity with 200 illegal goods, they will all be in the shielded cargo holds.

General Discussion / Re: I found perfect planet what should i do with it?
« on: December 08, 2020, 05:00:23 PM »
Well for starters some of the best planets I've had are when I've lucked out with terran eccentrics that have volatiles. Volatiles make bank more than anything else. Obviously rare ore is nice but its not the absolute best thing. Volatiles on a relatively low hazard planet are rare.

Second thing even if a planet is absolutely amazing and has everything you could ever want on it, it only is really worth colonizing if there are other half-decent planets in the system. The best planet possible isn't worth it without other planets to make a self-contained system that doesn't need outside trade or, failing that, at least turn a good profit.

That goes for playing vanilla or with stuff like Nex. With nex it really does help to have a place you have all the help you can ask for in the form of your defense fleets and a place to instantly resupply when you decided to bully someone like the Hegemony and they sent 14 vengeance fleets after you back to back.

Yeah there's a couple sites like that I've used for other games that have fallen out of use because they haven't been updated and something broke. I'd prefer to make a desktop version.

General Discussion / Ship loadout builder
« on: November 22, 2020, 08:11:00 AM »
Is there one that exists? I've looked around some and never found one, so I think it would be a great project idea to make one myself. I'd make it so popular mods could be implemented to include additional ship designs, weapons and hullmods. Being able to slap together something for sweaty theorycrafting nonsense without spending time in the console to add the weapons you want and boot the game up sounds good to me.

General Discussion / Re: Necessary 4X mechanics

I used to think I would like stuff like 4X mechanics in the game, more realistic and just makes sense and all that.

Does it make it fun however? Not a damn bit. Just tedious, I have enough of that at my day job.

« on: November 16, 2020, 06:31:27 PM »
I've tried the lasher a couple times in new game starts trying something new. I always hated it. The AAF is nice but versus anything bigger or better than a pirate destroyer it falls flat on it's face. I'd prefer at least a destroyer to not be critically damaged by a single stray harpoon, Lud forbid an atropos.

General Discussion / Re: Diable Avionics Help
« on: November 16, 2020, 05:07:19 PM »
Diable is deliberately slightly underpowered compared to vanilla iirc. Their weapons are also pretty bad. Wanzers are good and that one capital they have is good but because of the DP cost it doesn't offer enough for the cost imo.
