Personally I started with Paint.net (which is not bad for a beginner and don't let anyone tell you otherwise), and then moved to Krita when I started getting more in-depth with my 'bashes. I tried Gimp first, but it was far less user-friendly in my opinion, and Krita worked much better for me.

Incidentally, both Gimp and Krita are completely free to use.
I still use Paint.net

Ok many years ago I was making sprites for others to use for whatever they happen to fancy.
Now I am looking at creating a small faction (5-10 different ships of various designs) and would like to team up with a coder type person to make a mod that is compatible with Nexerelin.

When I first started kitbashing, I had no idea what I was doing, and my design philosophy hasn't changed too much since then. I basically take a ship, cut and paste random sections and see what the result is, then take another ship possibly and tweak things. The program I use is Paint.net and basically use different layers to do overlays and erasures to make sections seem to attach together.

One of the first ships I actually was happy with, Originally planned to be a unique capital ship for the pirate faction, honestly could probably use a few less large size mounts.


Was looking for a midtech carrier that wasn't just a converted Taurus. Planned for pirate and Hegemony use.


This little guy ended up becoming a higher tech Lasher replacement. Similar mounts and placement, just one less overall, but decent with several energy mounts and two universal hardpoints.

Taking someone work isn't taboo, it's illegal! (unless specifically told otherwise, and even then it depends of the author's country laws). Besides, very few of the sprites here ever get used, so the risk isn't worth it.
I would remind you that this is a free sprite thread, I set it up as such in the first post.

Anyway kitbashing falls under transformative work in any which case.

If you still need a station I'll do it. Will probably repurpose a tarsus freighter as well as give it a bit more of a living space look (gears are turning in my brain, give me a couple of days and I'll be able to do it.

Bah, as soon as I download a new version, I cut the price from 50credits to 20 credits, and set the Fog of war to false. No need to wait on the developer :P

Interesting design, it's like a hound crossed with a mule...  though, to me, that split prow just screams "Put a large ballistic hardpoint here!" instead of the... "fuel tank with a turret" look it's got now.
