That worked thanks!

Is there somewhere I can look to see where the questline starts are for whats been added? Aside of the walk through, the AI quests and prisim I haven't found anything else.

Not totally sure whats going on here...

But I keep getting this error message after installing this.

"Fatal:DIRECTORY:

Check starsector.log for more info

I look at the "NEX_ALICORN_PROJ.PROJ" file and it starts with:

So { seems to be the very first character in the text pad.... am I missing something? To be clear I have not edited this text file at all before getting this error.

This is a fresh install of starsector and a fresh install of nex plus supporting mods that it needs. I have no other mods installed.

Today we start with an idea; a concept; a story of conflict between many factions.

While this mod will *Not include any custom ships, what it will include is storylines that will add life to your game.

I am currently looking for someone with experience with SafariJohn's Rules Tool and mod creation to join me on this project.

What am I hoping to do here?
1)
Commission Quests - "What are we paying you for? Get to work mercenary!"
-A collection of commission quests for each factions as a requirement to your continued employment, refusing or failing to complete quests will reduce your relationship levels till you eventually get fired. This gives you something you HAVE to do instead of mindlessly traveling the galaxy.
-Faction underling, to admin, to faction leader quest progression. As your known to be more reliable by completing quests for them, you'll be offered progressing more dirty, secret, or straight up suicidal quests.

2)
World Quests - "I heard your reliable and can get things done, thats why I've come to find you"
-A collection of world quests that you can find randomly in the bar, or through some station npcs that trigger a branching questline.
-the goal is to create various quests that matter for longer than one quick drop off point. This could be something that seems like a normal quest till you get there and than you trigger a 2ndary quest or progress through a chain of them. We want the world to feel like more than just a fetch quest one point quest system cuz sometimes things get messy, things don't go as planned, an ambush or false information planted by a pirate could quickly turn what seems like a stash raid quest, into a fight for your life and a trail of revenge to get the loot you came for, or the blood price repaid for being attacked.
-A factionless set of story quests based out of your starting home planet, that effects the overall world with its actions. The choices you make through this story will effect those around you, but sometimes you need to pick a side and fight all that appose your united faction! The goal here would be to create a storyline that branches depending on what faction you wish to support.

I figure if I can look at the code around that it will give me a better idea of what would be required to add to other nps, possibly copy pasta with some changes of names may be possible? I'm seeing alot of information and endless player mods around ship spirites, classes and how to properly setup ships in general to be added to the game as a mod - I assume this is why the mass majority of mods are people just making new spirites/factions/ships?

My question is; how does one go about creating questlines in the game.

I'm seeing next to nothing for actual line or branching questlines in the game beyond the heg or academy, so it feels super empty out there...

I'd be interested in creating some more quests; but I'm not seeing a map editor like back in the day playing starcraft 1, so how hard or what would the process be to actually try to create some quests in game that differ from the rest?

I would need to be able to:
-edit lines of text that trigger the ability to trigger other lines of text from that npc or another location.
-enable npcs in spaceport like archon or CEO to give quests instead of auto closing coms.
-spawn ships as part of the quest
-spawn items in random location as part of quest
-detect item is in players inventory and if true trigger the ability to trigger other lines of text from that npc or another location.
-spawn fencing simulator that triggers the ability to trigger other lines of text from that npc or another location.
-spawn npc that may or may not exist in game yet


I think with the ability to do these few things I could make a rather complex and interesting questline or branching questline.

Theres a mod caled progressive s-mods that while not exactly what your requesting; it does give a very similar feel to progression, meaning that depending on ship size, each hull mod is worth a variable amount of xp based on ship size. You can spend xp to lock in s-mods, spend xp for more s-mods and than spend more xp to lock in another s-mod in the slot your unlocked. I have a ship with 5 s-mods unlocked atm and I think there is at least a 6th (96kxp tho) but I donno if theres a 7th cuz I haven't got that far yet.

The same hull mod will cost less xp on a smaller or medium size ship than it will on your largest ships, so the progression is good even for lower level ships cuz they require less xp to use the same higher tier mods.

So by doing it this way you can reduce the amount of points used for your hull mods by stacking more s-mods as you increase in xp. This increases the amount of points you have for weapons or shield/vent and makes your ship stronger.

I have a tempest in the game I'm currently playing that was my starter ship and due to how much xp I've gained on it, its quite a bit stronger than other tempests or even ships that should technically be stronger than it, so it makes for a great ship to follow my larger ships with now that I'm no longer driving it and using a fast cruiser.

ehhhhhh, expanding on the fencing would lose the "holy *** they actually did this? the madmen!" feeling of the original quest imo.
It's completely out of the blue- especially for newer players, but even knowing that "I studied the blade" is a vanilla line makes me laugh- and making it more of a system would detract from that in a major way (and take away from the actual content of the quest, turning duelling into something that normal captains do fairly often removes the feeling that it's a bizarre thing that you've been challenged to)

as for the rest of your ideas, more quests to differentiate the factions are a cool idea (and what I think the next update will largely be about)- though having them come from important people all the time would feel wierd and forced imo.
I.E, getting a quest from artemisia sun would be wierd because she's the CEO of TT and we're just a spacer who's good at running errands, but getting a quest from the leader of lacaille habitat to help them secede from the league would be reasonable; we've already helped them with this before and they might not want to let anyone else in on the plan (or something similar).

Not totally sure i agree; if you completed quests from her underlings or you where in her commission and showed you could be trusted by completing some missions and being reliable with good standing, than why WOULDNT they offer to hire you for some more complex jobs as one of their most willing and able agents?

The whole commission thing suggests your under their service, a mercenary group basically, yet your not put on any kind of mercenary kind of tasks that someone would hire some killers or problem solvers for; namely something important enough to justify payin them.

Like they just gona pay you tens of thousands of credits every month to basically "keep a eye out" and "maybe do some stuff" naw they gona have expectations, maybe have a expectation of at least one mission a month completed for fact in order to get paid; cuz getting paid for nothing is pretty lame and takes away from what I feel a faction would be commissioning a mercenary group for; the dirty jobs they either can't be seen doing, or wouldn't want to waste their own units on; suicide jobs; hidden jobs; mystery jobs; delicate jobs; impossible jobs; - jobs that treat you like the bottom of the barrel dirt they must view you as, while still seeing your useful enough to get their goals completed, but not care enough about you if you survive. Maybe some factions could be more or less friendly but from what I can see the hegemony and even TT would both think of the player and his smaller faction as something inferior to them to be manipulated and used for their own gains; but after you join their commission this doesn't really happen; your offered the same ole missions, nothing special, no storyline, no faction goals, no point aside of free money and I just see this as a wasted opportunity.

To be clear I haven't actually played out the hegemony quest; only heard of it; I always have too much ai to actually be on their team, even if I allied them they would hostile me again whenever they did a ai sweep of a planet, either for finding them, or being destroyed in orbit.

Its next to impossible to actually stay with the hegemony if you actually use ai cores, you can't do enough quests fast enough to counter out the loss from them finding or not being able to find your ai cores.

I'm at the point honestly where this game needs dialog so badly that I would legitimately be down to create some quests if the mod creation program was half decent.. I used to make maps on starcraft 1 OG back in the day cuz the map editor to create things was very detailed; however I feel like thats not the case here.

Do you guys have any reading material on creating mods for this or is there an available program to use?

Honestly more quests in general would help this have longer life and not feel so dead after you complete the current quests in game.

I think its a huge shame that "important people" like the ceo or the archon don't have any kind of quests for you, they basically just shrug you off... plus commissioning factions dont seem to have any kind of quests or real reason to be exploring or doing anything unless you hit a bar and pickup a bar quest.. but even than bar quests are pretty generic one n done kinda things, nothing that really progresses or makes the world feel alive; no real choices being made past military ones; nothing requested from your contacts any better than what you find at the bar, its all the same really it feels, where faction quests could easily solve this.


The fencing simulator is pretty basic but decent concept that could be expanded upon.

More reasons to do it:
- challenge a enemy commander to decide a battle instead of space battle, the loser leaves the area or maybe even multiple options of what the loser can do or what the goal of the winner is
- arena sports in pirate controlled planets and spaceports.
- quests that have a option for you to duel it out instead as a solution


Could prob figure out more ways to do this but its just couple off top of my head.

Could expand farther into things like duelist equipment, could have different grades with their own pros/cons like low/mid/high tech. Maybe low tech takes more hits, but high tech gives you a shield that takes one hit every x secs, maybe mid gives you a speed increase.

Just saying theres more potential here for that then is being used if its only in one quest (maybe?) that I haven't actually triggered but heard of.

Being able to colonize a world in their system without the faction organizing a sat bomb expedition to wipe your new colony off the map.

In case of Hegemony, also access to the Princess of Persea side quest that ends in an '80s style fighting game like Gladiator or Karate Champ.

Can you elaborate on the quest or how to start/trigger it? Is it still active in nex if you dont use core worlds and use the direlect questline?

tbh I've had my fair share of fun in devmode and I was wondering why that fencing simulator was in the game - I personally think its under utilized.

No one is saying that you need a brand new RTX 3090 worth two months' salary. I have a GTX 1050 (that's 6 years old and like fifty bucks) and the game runs perfectly fine for me. Just about any non-AMD card will do really.

Problem is theres no used cards arounds me; I have to buy a new one.

So best "budget" option I can see around atm is the 2060 12gb for $369 canadian, anything else in the market is gona be a downgrade for me and that doesn't make sense.

Just curious if theres any kind of like additional quests or missions I'm missing out on?

Like does joining a commission of a faction give you faction only missions of any kind aside of aiding them in defense or invasions?

I've tried commissions a few times in a few games but nothing ever seemed to pop up and the money doesnt really matter once you get to a point where your planets are making enough money.

The fact none of the planet people give you any different quests than you could get in the bar from randoms kinda sucks too, like the archon or CEO seem like important people that could be added to quests but... they just ignore you and theres nothing.

Man I wish there was more to do in this game cuz I do enjoy it alot, but after the academy missions basically galaxy domination is the only option I can see...

I installed the nex mod and tried the story mode on there with the direlects but honestly theres not really any story or additional missions here either; you just got a bunch of weak planets for everyone to take over.

Is there any mods someone knows of that adds actual missions to the game?

Is it possible to mod missions into the game? How hard is it to make a mod? Is there a mod creation application or? This games great enough that I'm actually debating upgrading my r9 290 for the first time ever cuz it cant run the game... been serving me great for years and its kinda weird this is the game to make me upgrade but tbh its hard to justify that if theres like nothing to do in the game aside of "make your own fun" it kinda makes alot of these people on planets to talk to feel lifeless when they just auto shut coms on you, or they are a generic person that gives you the same bar quests everyone else does.

Suggestions / Graphic settings added to game

My suggestion is to add some graphical settings to the game so we can actually attempt to change settings and improve our performance for those of us with amd cards r 290 to 580 being common cards.

In particular; having a setting to turn down or disable the effects of explosions could see people with amd cards see a large performance boost in combat.

Explosion types that effect fps for amd users:
missile explosions
ship explosions
rift laser explosions
missile engines
ship engines
fighter engines

If there was some way to turn these off and replace them the effect with a flat jpg graphic than we could massively reduce what is bogging down the amd cards.

Myself personally; I would not be bothered at all if the graphic of the ship included the engine fire/blast out the back. We are moving 90% of the time to get into battle, chase something, or move around something so they are almost always on anyways.. disabling this effect and replacing it with a lower resource graphic like a flat jpg or a 2nd version of the ship with engine fires built into the ship graphic; than we wouldn't 'need' to have dynamic engine blasts while it still shows engines.

If it was made a flat graphic could do something like swap graphic 1 for graphic 2 if x conditions are met; like having your engines blown out; instead of using your gpu to create a fire graphic at the engine; you could just instead be swapping one graphic for another graphic whenever the engines turn on or off or are destroyed than fixed. It would take "alot" less resources to swap one graphic for another or even just use one solid graphic than having multiple engines turn on and off and bog your game down to unplayable levels under 30 fps.

If this can help amd users play above 30 fps than I really feel like this is worth putting into development since anyone from a r9 290 to a 580 is having the same problems that could be mostly solved by this; yes performance wouldn't be amazing still but at least 30fps playable is better than the 12-17 fps I had when I first got into end game and started fighting larger fleets... it feels bad once you get this invested into a game with smaller fleets to realize that by the time you make it to endgame your fps is so bad that its forcing you to stop playing.

Any reading material on diplo?

In particular how to effect "traits" and "revanchism" or what they even are, I'm -50 to -70 in these and I'm not totally use how to change/efffect them.

I'm +100 favor in a faction I want in my alliance, but due to "traits" and "revanchism" being in the minus it cancels out the +25 I get from having them +100 rep in the dipl profile screen on intel.

Any kind of alliance/diplo guide?

In particular I'm trying to figure out how to vote on things, or rather, how to bring up votes on things. Can I force my alliance to go hostile verse another faction/alliance if I call a vote for it? Can I call a vote for a coordinated attack or invasion of a system? What about ordering my alliance to sabotage a planet or sector?
