Bug Reports & Support / compressed save file - saved as a .zip
« on: July 27, 2013, 05:24:43 PM »
I installed the star wars revisited mod along with lazyLib, and wanted to mess around a bit. I wanted to change a few values in the save file, but when I tried to access it, what was usually campaign.xml was now known as campaign.zip. It doesn't open with neither 7zip nor winzip, and when I open it with notepad+ the characters are jumbled, like it's compressed. The file size is about 300 KB, while my other files are around 6-7 MB, which indicates that the file is compressed.

Anyone know exactly what is causing this, and how I can work around it to change the values?

Suggestions / a suggestion for the implementation of mining.
« on: September 24, 2012, 11:37:49 PM »
This was originally posted as a reply in http://fractalsoftworks.com/forum/index.php?topic=4351.0 <-that thread, but I think it would be best if it had it's own thread, so it could be discussed properly.
I will copy the original post in it's entirety, and just paste it here.

What I mean is, you don't do the mining yourself, you just toss a space station near an asteroid belt and on a daily basis it produces stuff you then take this stuff to another place for it to convert it into supplies/weapons/ships, wich in turn you can put in your other stations for them to be sold...Or just use'em yourself...

I'd actually like to do the mining myself, in the style of SPAZ, but slightly different.

You outfit a ship (like the venture) with one or more mining blasters, or other similar weapons, and shoot the asteroids. This should break them apart in smaller pieces, which can then be collected with tractor beams, and packaged so it will fit in freighters. You can have specialised tractor ships and packaging ships, making the process faster and better. You can of course also have fleets that automatically do this, if you don't want to do this yourself.

And if you don't like the idea of tractor beams, due to it being pretty unrealistic, you can always substitute it with "mover" drones. They are basically drones with large engines and grappling hooks, attaching themselves to asteroids, and moving them towards and into the freighters.

A good way of showing how the ores are stored in the freighters would be animated ship parts. On ships like the buffalo, the sides or other parts could open up, exposing the cargohold. The atlas is a different beast, as it has a tonne of small cargo containers on the outside of the hull. These could be animated as well, by only appearing when items are moved into it. These animations should only appear when you're mining in an area with no enemy ships, as it would endanger the ships too much with exposed cargoholds. This would also help diminish the effects on performance, as only relevant ships are on screen, along with only a couple of projectiles.

Of course, I don't know how hard it would be to animate sections of the hull, but I imagine it could possibly be done with fake built-in weapon mounts, as these can already be animated.

Also, if someone could send me a PM with instructions on how to make the link look like the one in the OP I posted above, it would be much appreciated.

Suggestions / Off-topic forum
« on: March 09, 2012, 12:17:00 AM »
Hi guys.
I like this forum a lot, but I think something is missing. In my opinion, we could really use an off-topic section. You guys are great to talk to, but sometimes, I want to talk about something not related to starfarer.

An example of what I want to talk about:
I'm in the process of making a huge spaceship in minecraft. The interior will be fully complete, but I'm running out of things to add. I'd like some suggestions.

I'm not gonna turn this into a thread for this, I just want a sub-forum to talk about this stuff :)

General Discussion / new player, first thoughts.
« on: February 10, 2012, 01:26:38 PM »
Hey guys.
I bought the game today, and so far it is awesome.
I love the game, it is extremely satisfying. The handling of the different ships feel just right, and all of the weapons are balanced pretty well. The game is incredibly hard, much more so than most other games I've played, which just means that when I eventually do complete a mission it feels much more rewarding. The random mission is also a lot of fun, I love the weaponry of the capital ship you control. Though, I do tend to get a little too close to the enemies, which always ends up with me being more grey than I should be... I love how one small mistake can screw you over completely, unless you really put a lot of effort into the rest of the battle. Also, I like how that you know that you could have avoided death at all times if you had done something differently, or had chosen to deploy different ships at the start.
No bugs so far, and the game feels very polished, especially for an alpha build.
I'm really looking forward to the campaign mode, though, it looks like a lot of fun.

General Discussion / official stance on piracy?
« on: February 03, 2012, 07:26:35 AM »
Hello everyone.
I'd just like to know what Alex' stance on piracy is. I've been following this game for a few weeks, and at the moment it seems like I'll be buying it. However, before I do that, I'd like to see if the game will run on my laptop, and if I like the game.
Normally, I'd check steam, and see if there was a demo available, but as this is still in alpha, it's not on steam (yet?), and there is currently no demo.
Basically, I'd like your opinion on a few different "scenarios" of piracy. Here they come:

Can afford the game, knows it's good, knows it will run, pirates anyway.
Knows it's good, knows it will run, however cannot afford the game. Buys as soon as possible.
knows it's good, but doesn't know if it will run smoothly, and can't afford the game. Buys if the game runs smoothly as soon as possible.
Have only seen videos on youtube (or not at all), doesn't know about how the game runs, but can actually afford it. Uses the pirated copy as a demo. Will buy if good, and if it runs smoothly.
Have at most seen videos on youtube, doesn't know about the quality of the game, or the requirements. Does not have the money at hand. Will use as a demo, and if good enough, will buy the game when the money is there.

Personally, I'll be in the third category. I like space combat games, especially top-down. I have a beast of a desktop, and if the game doesn't run at at least 30 FPS with everything on high/max, something is wrong with the game. My parents are divorced, however, and I cannot bring my desktop with me to my mother's place. I use a laptop sporting a 2.2 GHz singlecore processor (I know, but it's mostly used for school and programming Java programs) and a intel graphics card. The graphics card is surprisingly powerful, but the processor is lacking.
The computer has been manufactured by Packard Bell, but I have uninstalled their stuff, so that is not a problem. I have windows 7 installed, and quit most of the running processes when I'm about to play games.

Basically, I'm hoping that you're feeling the same way that Notch does, and will allow piracy of your game as long as the game is bought when the pirate has the money. I did the same thing with skyrim (I can actually prove it, I still have the crack of it^^), and own it on steam at the moment.

I hope to hear from you soon, and look forward to eventually playing your game :)

EDIT: By the way, I have not even started looking for a crack of the game, but if Alex is okay with it, I'll start. Also, if at all possible, another solution would be a 7 day cd-key so I can try the game for a short while.
