What the hell are you doing back there? (AI annoyances)
« on: August 18, 2012, 10:24:19 PM »

So my fleet consists of just 3 ships. I'm flying a frigate, I've got another frigate dedicated to point defense that I have escorting my third and final ship: a Hammerhead Destroyer.

The loadout for the destroyer is:
  • 18 Capacitors
  • 8 Vents
  • Integrated Targeting
  • Stabilized Shields
  • 2 x Tactical Lasers (front turrets)
  • 2 x Light Needlers
  • 2 x Harpoon MRM

The problem is, the destroyer is scared of actually getting into a fight. I keep setting up the destroyer with perfect opportunities to attack other destroyers from behind, but instead the Hammerhead is constantly on the edge of battle playing it safe. I'm guessing the AI is disliking the loadout I've selected for the ship.

Another issue I've noticed, when putting the wolf-class frigate on escort duty at the beginning of a battle, it will only use its phaze jump in order to catch up the Hammerhead. I've yet to see it actually use it to avoid incoming fire.

ships have always been more on the " THIS IS WHERE I DIE! D: " side when in small engagements.

Yeah, ships don't really use the phase skimmer to avoid damage. I've seen Medusae get big hole blown in them by a stray bomb or two getting through from a Piranha attack... why not just phase out of the way? I suppose its hard to tell if the phasing would just lead to much worse damage from not having shields.

Really? The Medusa and Wolf? I see them blinking in and out for venting/fast offense, but never away from missiles, bombs, or fighters (all of which a quick skim will put the ship in a much safer position). Maybe I'm just not paying attention enough :P.

oh yeah... I can never hit them with missiles... (barring overload, ofc)

They also have the annoying tendency to blink out of the way of my onslaughts on ramming speed...

I've noticed a mix of both reckless and careful AI ships, it almost seems like there are different AI personalities.

Maybe crew level is affecting this, too

yeah ive noticed this too....
once i had hound just charge straight at my Onslaught and for some reason even 2 salvos didnt change his mind so he got vaporized....second hound from the same fleet tried the more annoying approach and kept trying to get to my unprotected rear and shoot the engines....
same ships 2 completely different behaviors....
maybe Alex could shed some light on this...

Well if Alex make AI to behave in that way intentional its absolutely brilliant. It wouldn't be interesting if AI always have same approach. If AI can simulate human mistakes, it's... it's... AWESOME!  ;D

hounds have always had 2 methods of attack:

harass when possible (IE: try to swerve in and out of enemy fire)
or
flank immediately to where they are unprotected

those aren't personalities, they're tactics(strategy?).

pretty sure personalities are disabled at the moment (meaning they're there, at least a basis of them are)

who knows? maybe they'll come back next patch, if officers make it in...

looking forward to that

this way you have to choose your captains carefully, let the careful guy run the Gemini on the back while your fearless officers command the Enforcers and Dominators in the fray

yeah but i dont count flying into full salvo of heavy maulers and full mjolnir burst not to mention countless HVD shells as harassing but more like suicidal twitch

I'm guessing the AI is disliking the loadout I've selected for the ship.

I'm definitely going to have to take another, serious look at what gets classified "civilian".

Another issue I've noticed, when putting the wolf-class frigate on escort duty at the beginning of a battle, it will only use its phaze jump in order to catch up the Hammerhead. I've yet to see it actually use it to avoid incoming fire.

Hmm. I can promise you they do use to get out of a tough spot (for some definition of "tough spot" - generally, high-damage incoming missiles qualify) - it's just that when you're watching it, you don't know whether it has any charges saved up - and since it's aggressive about using them for maneuvering, it often does not.

As it turns out, we're actually just killing the little people who live inside our computer.
Poor little people.  :(
