The little armour boxes, combined with damaged weapons, makes it actually feel like I'm being shot where it looks like I'm being shot. I'm looking at ships shooting each other, instead of abstractions representing ships shooting each other.

It's been compared to SPAZ before. In SPAZ I'll cynically turn a couple pixels to change which armour plate is being hit. I'll also worry when I'm retreating about whether I'm too angled. Starfarer not only stops me from exploiting the mechanic, it stops me worrying that I'm not exploiting it properly.

SPAZ just didn't do it for me, somewhy. If I remember right, it didn't have nearly as close weapons choices and such Starfarer has, nor could you get a large fleet yourself.

Yeah the max fleet is, well, a very manageable size. Four ships of descending sizes.

It's also balanced around specializing in one weapon type, and I agree, as I prefer to have my ships decide what I'll field, not my admiral.

I really enjoy these kinds of space shooty games though. I also have Moonpod's Starscape, where you have three ships but can only field one of them at a time, as you only have one pilot.

This really is a very cool and original game. There are still parts that I'm not very good at, and plenty of things I am nowhere near understanding fully. But at the same time, this game is so compelling that it has enormous replay value. And its opposing forces' AI, despite being inferior to human cunning & deception, can still be one very tough enemy at times.
