[0.8a RC19] Immobile objects can join battles
« on: April 29, 2017, 11:21:39 AM »

Got a bit of a suprise when fooling around near a battlestation.
Apparently this massive seemingly immobile hulk of an entity can skip around an entire planet to join its chums in glorious battle.
Immobile things probably shouldn't be able to do that.

This was reported earlier, not a bug. Supposedly the opposing fleet maneuvers within range of the station.

The game was completed 8 years ago and we get a free expansion every year.

Arranging holidays in an embrace with the Starsector is priceless.

Just want to add that there *are* bugs about how disengaging is handled in this case; the station definitely shouldn't join in that etc.

If the opposing fleet maneuvers within range of an immobile station, it cannot also be on the opposite side of the planet engaging the the players fleet.
Immobile objects can't move, so they shouldn't be able to join anything at all.

Conceptually: your fleet in that situation has 1) the choice of engaging the enemy fleet, which will pull back to the station and only give battle then, or 2) disengaging, taking the station of out of the equation for the pursuit. That second part isn't working.

The "other side of the planet" or whatnot is all highly approximate in terms of the transition between campaign and combat, there's not much realism to be had there in the first place and I'm entirely ok with that.

That said: made a note to adjust the text about the station joining so that it better explains stuff.

(Also: this subforum is for bug reports only, so if you'd like to talk about this further, the suggestions forum is probably a  better place for it.)
