Scrapping instead of boarding? maybe Dismantling?
« on: February 20, 2012, 08:32:54 AM »

Is there a benefit to scrapping ships instead of boarding them? do you get more supplies? more credits? or is it basically just letting the ship drift in space?

Maybe a mechanic could be added later where you dismantle the ship?

a third option in the after battle screen, dismantle..

The ship still joins your fleet with a bare minimum crew and stays for a couple days (but does NOT partake in combat) and after a few days/week or so it is removed from your fleet and you gain some credits, some supplies and fuel, and a chance for a module or 2 (weapon) simulating battle damage beyond repair and such..

But that can be added later me thinks, it was just an idea I had :)

You avoid losing marines in a boarding action. But since the captured ships are always worth at least an order of magnitude more then the marines you lose, that is only really relevant when deciding the order in which you capture ships, capturing those you want most first, and not when deciding whether or not to capture something.

And your proposal would still require you to board that ship first, and if you do that, you might as well just sell it.

It's not he loss of marines I care about.. it's the loss of speed for my fleet :P

Screw the Marines.. they signed up for it :P

I'd love to pick up every ship I find to sell it, but if I do that there wont be any fleets I could catch anymore..

I always carry a large amount of Marines as well as spare crew. they are damn cheap compared to what ships sell for :P

Perhaps in the future there will be "scrap dealer" stations or perhaps even "junkyard mechanics" or w/e, where you could sell components you dismantled or even build a new ship if you have enough of them. Heck, there could even be rare dropped components that grants the built ship a bonus to OP points or engine durability or whatever..

God there is so much potential in this game...

Oh crap, I never even thought of that, getting some pieces from dismantled ships in order to have some new ones made, and rare bits that add OP or flux dissipation or whatever would be SWEET!

I think I'd like to see the current hull mods require this kind of thing. You know, salvage a bunch of armour plates in order to add heavy armour.

well currently when you scuttle a ship you get a pittance of supplies.. i would assume the same is true after battle. though i imagine that will be over hauled before completion of the game.

You won't be able to refit fighters and bombers at all. They're designed/balanced around having a particular set of weapons and would be very broken if you could change it. Which ones you pick for your fleet -out of quite a few that are available- is the choice here, not how they're outfitted.

Since mining operations are going to be in the game, i think towing the hulks back to a facility to recover the materials might get into the game.

The battle station is not completely operational, shall we say.

"Now witness the firepower of this thoroughly buggy and unoperational batt... Oh, hell, you know what? Just ignore the battle station, okay?"

basic crafting will be nice addition, scrap 10 random ships and get resources for new one.
