I'm playing 0.7 this way, and I think it'd benefit from being an official feature.

It should be a super simple addition, and would add an extra level of tension (and sense of accomplishment!) to the campaign, even well into the mid/end game!

You could even have a retirement option (with associated presentation of lifetime accomplishments) after you've survived XYZ years in the command chair.

I wouldn't mind this if only so that it'd make deleting saves where I've screwed up massively more entertaining than just typing in Delete

This sounds pretty interesting.  Just sort of a benchmark to end the game on - it doesn't really have an end yet, anyway.
