Fatal sound error on windows10
« on: October 09, 2015, 08:23:45 AM »

When trying to launch the game on a windows 10 laptop I encounter an error that it cannot initialize the music, here's the relevant chunk of the starsector.log

I have tried disabling musiclib and the error persists, it appears to be independent of any mods.
I have also tried reinstalling starsector to no effect.

Hi - sorry about the trouble! A couple of questions:

Did the game ever successfully run before on this computer?

Does it run with sound turned off from the launcher?

After some searching around, it looks like for someone, at least, this error was resolved by rebooting; could you give that a shot?

Yes I installed the game and mods and ran them for a few hours prior to the Windows 10 upgrade but this is the first attempt with 10.

It runs very smoothly with sounds disabled in the launcher (though I miss the dakka and explosions)

Rebooting does not appear to have fixed it but I will try a second reboot and let you know if that does anything.

Edit: after the second reboot no change.

Hmm. At this point, I'd try a clean reinstall of the game (meaning, manually delete the Starsector folder from Program Files (x86)/Fractal Softworks, after saving whatever you need from there - the mods folder, the saves folder, etc).

Trying to hunt down and delete any stray OpenAL32.dll/OpenAL64.dll files you might have - likely in Windows/System32 and Windows/System - might also be worth a shot. I'd definitely save those and just rename them instead of deleting - i.e. rename OpenAL32.dll to OpenAL32.dll.backup, or some such. There's a possibility that this is what was causing the sound issues - a different version of this DLL being used than the one that comes with the game.

The initial reinstall is to try and fix the game not running at all after the 2nd reboot, because that's just weird.

I'm convinced the startup issues after the second boot are just the laptop being slow on the uptake it did eventually start working again and I lost another embarrasingly long string of hours to it, I'll hunt down the .dlls tomorrow and report back because it's currently too late in the night for intensive troubleshooting.

The only OpenAL files I have are in starsector, there are 3, OpenAL32.dll.old, OpenAL32.dll, and OpenAL64.dll
Removing the .old and renaming the 32.dll didn't do anything.

Hmm. Taking the opposite tack, can you try installing OpenAL? Perhaps something about the combination of your system and the version of OpenAL that comes with the game doesn't work.

You should be able to grab the windows installer here:
https://www.openal.org/downloads/

Thanks for trying it. Hmm - I'm not sure what else to try; seems like it's something going on on your system (duh), but out of ideas for what that might be at the moment.

What sound card are you using, and are the drivers up-to-date?

Also, since this is Windows 10, there's a fair chance those drivers are simply not completely bug-free yet.
