I always name my ships of the line/flagship/biggest ship "Victory".  Its won a lot of battles, and it is so epic! The Victory, yet she fights pirate scouts... :'( :'( :'(

My Captains are all suspicious lots who believe the rumour that it's bad luck to rename a ship. Currently running with the Ferentina, Gullveig and Centeotl which are all fabulous names anyway.

Good call for a topic, but there was already a similar thread, burried within the forums:  :)

Alright, now it is time for me to "re-route" this thread! Tell us what you use as your ship prefix and what it stands for!

I usually go with KCV - Kytalian Combat Vessel.  The Kytalians - a race of my own creation - are a well advanced and very curious race that possesses a great deal of resourcefulness and ingenuity.  Kytalians are also quite fond of challenges, so rather than the continuous development of most races, the Kytalians usually spend several centuries trying to learn all they can with their current technology.  After running out of things to learn, they advance a bit further before halting and repeating the cycle.  I'm quite fond of them, so I decided to use their designations for my Starfarer ships.

I think i'll go ahead and stop there before this post turns into story. >_>

Persoanally i'm left over with names from Bridge Commander/Starfleet Command 2 era. My main ship is always AKS Armageddon, and when a ships proves itself enough, gets noticed, it gets upgraded to a plenthora of custom names from my deadly repertoire:

-AKS Apocalypse
-AKS Ragnarok
-AKS Atlas Grind
-AKS Gargantua
-AKS Ronin
-AKS Golgotha

And to prove the names come from the period when i was 14 years old, the AKS stands of Ass-Kicking-Ship. -.-

I've been playing Uomoz's Corvus, so I hope I don't confuse people who are unaware of it.

Capital Ships:

Banshee Class- Lance of the Emperor, Blade of the Emperor
Jackhammer Class- Omnissiah, Deus Ex Machina
Titan Class- Adam, Eve
Sandstorm Class- Eschaton, Judgement Day, Exterminatus
Nausicaa Class- Astartes

Crusiers:
Aurora class- Ptolemios
Apogee Class- Void Walker, Orion's Belt, The Corsair
Pile Driver Class-Vanguard

Destroyers:
Medusa Class-Thermopylae, Daedalus, Icarus
Hammerhead Class- Theia, Rhea

Frigates:
Hyperion Class: Corsair, Gladiator
Tempest Class: Lady Luck, Miss Fortune, Thunderstruck

I tend to name my ships off of things from pop culture or history.  Warhammer 40k makes an appearance, as well as biblical history and Greek/Roman gods and mythology.  A lot of names come from my own sci-fi stories (I wrote a few for school projects/ contests).

i like sharing my ship names.
while i havent set up any big naming convention (i will when the game is out for good).
right now i just put names that sits well with me.

right now, all ship have the ISS denomination as i find it classy (Independant StarShip) but that will change when the real game is out, ships will carry the Phyrexian StarShip (PSS)

as for ship names, i try to give them a little something with meaning. but sometime i just give them names i like or downright meaningless stuff when im out of idea

Names depend on ship models and not there class.
my two hounds have name reminescent of speed (Raptor and Thunderbolt)
my 3 lashers have names from stargate (Prometheus, Deadalus and Sun Tzu)
my hammerhead also has a name from stargate (Apollo)
my medusa dosent have any meaning (ISS Bola, like the weapon)
my eagle cruiser is named yet again after the lantian cruiser from stargate (ISS Orion)

i had a buffalo MK2 that i named ISS Sulaco after alien reference. the ship eventually got sold but i plan on re-using this cool name :p

my ship when the game is out will have a much more concrete naming convention of course

My current naming schema is to keep whatever name the ship has, but remove the numerals, and change the prefix to have my character's initials (e.g., if my character's name is Joyeuse Almacia, then every ship in her fleet will have the prefix JAS - Joyeuse Almacia's Ship).

Mostly it's because I'm still in the "field a crapton of ships" phase, and it's not particularly efficient to give a ship a nice name when I'm going to mothball it after a couple of battles because I want to try something else. Probably once I settle down (which is going to happen pretty soon, even though I'm running Uomoz's Corvus mod; I'm 100% sure my flagship is going to be an Interstellar Federation Auria-class battleship - stick a Cain in the 360deg turret slot and a Hadron Accelerator in the Large Universal and you're well on your way to eating Onslaughts for breakfast), I'll start naming ships after mythological weapons (as if my character's name isn't already a dead giveaway, I'm quite a fan of the Matter of France).
