this is VERY irritating, because not only are they immune to damage before they are actually out of range, but they can also still fire and furthermore the AI doesn't even realize they are invincible, and so blindly takes hits from a ship that is immune to damage while they attempt to kill it.

Maybe I'm not understanding something. If they're off the map, how could you see that?

well it includes when they are at the border, exiting the map; my projectile shots pass clean over them, and when they are entirely off the map, and selected as target, they don't take any damage from my weapons either.

Hmm. I can't reproduce it w/ ships going off the map - or somewhat off the map - but do see it when they're farther off. (Fixed now, btw - was an issue with not having collision buckets far enough outside the map).

Maybe it was because of abnormal map dimentions?

ok, I'll try adjusting them, see if that helps.
