Ok, now this is just getting silly...

Spoiler
[close]

I think the game is trolling me...

(Also, yay for an Eagle!)

EDIT: Also a Dominator on the black market! Woohoo!

I find myself favoring an Afflictor to pilot due to the previous version, but for now, I have to get used to the current one and adapt as soon as possible. Frigate swarms will cost me in tolls, while Battleships will cost me in supplies. Destroyers are midline, yet have a good chance of its AI crew dying for being the mid-ship of two extremes (lacking the speed to evade potentially lethal shots, and lacking the firepower to keep ships from overwhelming).

A frigate fleet consisting of an Afflictor as flagship, 1 or 3 Tempest as "officer" ranks, Lasher as "regular" ranks taking down foes by number, and Monitor as "Spartan" special forces to draw fire while inflicting deadly strikes (with high enough ordinance to carry both AM blasters and high capacity/vents).

A Battleship pair would have a "Sword and Shield" Paragon duo, while a triumvirate has a triple Onslaught escorted with an Afflictor flagship as special forces.

On the early game, though... I may have get some credits and some ships to see if I would lean on the Frigate or Battleship fleets, depending on economy and need to hunt.

For now, it's too early for me to say what to deal in the sector's current version. It will take some time until I realize what the growth will lead to either two specialties.

Heron. I would kill for Heron.
But nope, hadn't seen a single on sale. Saw four in one fleet of Ludd, but couldn't board one.

Would it be possible that the military faction of Ludd to possess Herons as standard? (provided that the player is in friendly terms)

Unfortunately it is a possibility. Maybe a dozen levels later I will try to befriend them once more and check.

The lack of diversity on market offerings is a serious problem.  In 40 levels, I've yet to see an Apogee, Aurora, Tempest, Hyperion, Conquest, Doom, or Paragon, and I basically live in Tri-Tach space.

-edit-
Astral, not Paragon.  Paragons are everywhere.

I agree that it's a serious problem.
This chronic lack of diversity is all the worse because at present there's so little that a player can do about it in-game. I'm sorely tempted to make an effort to mod my way out of this.

Don't tell me I'm playing anything wrong in a singleplayer sandbox game. Just don't.

I mean, certain ships like the Paragon, Hyperion and the Aurora should be incredibly rare.  The balance is just off right now and I end up with two Odysseys, a Paragon, and a fleet of lesser ships, almost never any cruisers, and certainly never any decent frigates, just endless hounds, lashers, wolves, etc.  I don't know how the rolls for ship availability are weighted, but it seems heavy on the superheavies and light on ships folks actually use!

Does anyone know where a Conquest should spawn?  Or ever seen a Hyperion anywhere in game at all?

Yeah, if we knew how stations decide what's available for sale we might be able to suggest improvements. I'm guessing the Sindrian supply officer's apparent Heron fetish isn't an accident.

As I originally stated, the clear trend is that there is an extreme lack of cruiser-level ships and an extreme glut of certain capitals. There are also a number of ships that are extraordinarily rare to find.

Since my original post I've begun collecting those rarer ships. I'll go through what I've found:

Capitals:
Paragon - plentiful (I have 4 with two more for sale???)
Onslaught - amazingly plentiful (literally everywhere)
Odyssey - plentiful (I have 4, they seem to switch off with Paragons at the Tri-Tach place)
Conquests - n/a
Astral - n/a
Atlas - usually a couple in the Ludd system (which makes sense)
Prometheus - n/a (I might have seen one early in my game, but not again)

Cruisers:
Apogee - one, which I fly solo ;) (reasonably fair, considering how powerful it is)
Aurora - two, one which was captured
Dominator - maybe 3 ever (surprisingly rare for and old and common design)
Doom - n/a
Eagle - 4 (surprisingly rare given how many the pirates usually have)
Falcon - very common
Heron - nonexistent outside of Sindrian space, in which there are stupid amounts
Venture - a few are around, but typically on non military locations

Destroyers and frigs are fairly balanced in rarity. I've found a number of Medusas at the Tri-Tach place, as well as a couple phase frigates and one Hyperion.

As for fighters, they are really rare everywhere, less common than some of the bread-and-butter pirate frigs.

Anyways, the point of listing out all this is twofold: to compare it with what others have seen, and to show how the heavier classes are really imbalanced. It seems that the smaller ships follow a fairly reasonable rarity level that matches their tier/strength, while cruisers are extremely lacking on all fronts, and capitals are heavily weighted towards a few which are extremely common, and the others basically don't exist.

Now that you mention it... I haven't seen one of those in ANY of the markets. Not in the black markets, not in the military markets, not in the open markets. It seems that Midline ships are the rarest.

*cough* You know, aside from the shear enormious amount of vigilance frigates hanging around.

Yes I -am- sending you, alone, unarmed, against the might of the Hegemony defense fleet.  Not to worry - watching how they obliterate your puny frigate will be most... enlightening.  I shall dissect their tactics and emerge victorious!  Any questions? Then get to your ship, you launch in 5."

You could say that the supply officer...  8) is just for the birds.

I'm not a carrier player, so that's off my list. I'll stick with frigates... and I have yet to find a Monitor.
