So... when does this come out? I'd like to have built-in hull mod & OP support (the unofficial .35ap2 editors don't have this yet)

i too would like this much comrade ( bad attempt at bad Russian accent comrade. RAGE does that to you...)

but in all seriousness, i as well would like to see an official ship editor, or an official anything editor for that matter.

Currently to fix my variants, I have to have the debug-mode in-game variant editor open (so as to check OP conformingness), and manually edit the variant files [and try to figure out which slot is which; the ordering of the slots in the weapon selection categories helps, but it still has a fair number of limitations (esp. for ships with empty slots)] >.>

in the settings.json under starfarer/starfarer-core/data/controls(?), change the line near the top that says devmode=false, to devmode=true,

Due to Redbull's editor, probably not very soon :)

The "official" version wouldn't have hull mod or OP support, btw. It's strictly a hull editor, with the game being used to edit variants, like you're doing.
